Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

pips&peeps :

So........ let's start another topic on ameraucanas.

I am going to start brainstorming to put together a couple gift baskets for the winners at Nationals. Anyone have any ideas except for goodies??? Remember, these have to make a journey in a car for a couple days from WA to IN.

(If it's edible, it might not make it...

Thanks,

Are you representing the ABC at Nationals? Do we have bumper stickers - t-shirts???? Heck, I'll chip in if we need to buy stuff in Indiana to top it up. Let me know ...

I think the number one issue here, besides green legs, is the fact that none breed true.

But that aside, on the discussion of Wheaten - I don't know how many of you notice, but there's only four photos of true Wheaten females there, sorry. Everything else is either duckwing, duckwing with columbian restrictor, or duckwing and wheaten combined. The males are most likely duckwing, not wheaten.

Personally I hope when someone judges color, they can tell the difference between pure Wheaten and, well, not pure Wheaten. Just my two cents. Wheaten can vary, and its variations aren't too far from wildtype duckwing, but there are some good signs of distinction.

I need a huge one, like for birds or butterflies of North America, with true-to-life colors. Sigh. But it's such fun!!!

The Blehm Chantecler I ended up with has the brightest yellow HUGE feet! And in comparison to Athena the Silver, they are very stand-outish! I kept looking at her as a chick, thinking, "one of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong" to quote Sesame Street. And BANG one day the bright, crayon-yellow legs were staring me in the face!

That was one of the nicer boys there, it was Royce's and it didn't place like I thought he would.

Here is a pic of my black lf girl from that show:

Great idea. On Jr birds if I have to place them I don't give them a first and I write color/breed type or whatever is appropriate. APA/ABA lic judges are people just like you and I and each judge is going to do whatever they feel is right for the show. If it is an APA/ABA show there are rules that would take care of this. We cannot place birds with DQ's. Any judge that places a DQ bird in an APA/ABA show is open to all kinds of disciplinary actions.

Breed club members should also do some judge education. I always appreciate input from breeders.

Walt

What would you suggest be done if obvious EEs are placed at an upcoming APA/ABA show. What would be the best way to document and report this.

I can't see that happening, but if it does file a complaint with the show.

What are the signs of distinction? How do any of us know if it is pure wheaten or not? Chickens don't always have visual clues to whats really in them. Shamo's are a good example of not knowing what colors the birds really carry until you test mate.

All judges can do is go by the way the bird looks.

Royce's roo didn't place??????!!!!!!! What was the reason? I love that beard on that boy!

Oh Jeanine, can't hide from us now!

As for the Judge Bob, glad you looked at your mistakes and next time, be mindful about what you will be judging. I stand behind Denise on her birds and the WIC incident being banned for life was uncalled for. So there was two different things going on at the same day so I do not see anything she had said you were honky UNLESS someone whispered to you about Denise being upset about how it was judged unfairly.

As for EMsquared's newer flock from Cackle, sorry I only saw EE's. As for the bantams, I did see one wheaton pullet that had one leg out that is green and the leg underneath her was slate. That is how my monitor was seeing and I blew up the pictures even more to get more details of the colors. I believe her Silver Wheaton has slate legs and they do look alot nicer than the hatchery ee bantams. If she is serious about Ameraucanas, she should be able to start all over by asking alot of questions. I am sure Jean has alot more credit and respectfully Walt, breeders and judges can work together hand in hand to provide the best possible example of the breed. I trust Jean totally when it comes to Ameraucanas, even she informed me that my Ameraucana hen I had was not of color standard even her parents were John Blehm stock of different color...sure she would be pure Ameraucana by blood and type but not by color so therefore, she would be non standard. There are alot of knowledgeable people in here and they do deserve the respect.

Interesting thread and glad everyone is keeping level headed at times.

Speaking of Royce....this 6 week old pullet is about 3 generations removed from some of his stock. Liking her color so far, plus she's a total shoulder chicken
