Kathy, those are some nice looking WBS. Walt is correct on the color - on both counts. It looks like you are experiencing many of the same things I am. I did notice one MAJOR problem with what you said that really stood out to me.

I would like to strongly encourage you to remove the "if I ever" and change your mind to "when I start". I have long been a proponent of folks working on the WBS variety. I understand the natural enthusiasm and interest in creating new varieties. The past couple of years it's been the Lavender and now I see talk of a Chocolate. Yet, there is still so much work to be done on the varieties that we have.

I must confess that I had given thought to getting in on the Lavender fad but have changed my mind and decided to go back and just work on the WBS until I am satisfied with them. Which, for those who know me, probably won't happen. Btw, I have a nice Lavendar cockerel that can go if anyone is interested.

Overall, you have some very nice looking birds there. Especially the females as the male is still too young to know what he'll turn out like. I see good type, leg color, beards, etc. As with any picture, it's hard to tell without actually looking at the bird. I also see some things I'd be culling for and some I'd be watching closely. Ah, but isn't that the life of breeding?

I have made some nice improvements in my birds but they still have a long ways to go. The WBS variety needs to have some devoted breeders who will work on them with serious determination to get them where they need to be. I hope you'll strongly consider becoming one of them!

God Bless,

I have never been able to figure out why. Recently blue variations of wheaten female OEGB's have been producing fairly consistent color in females. Good enough to win big shows. I would love to find out how they are doing it.

Kathy has done a wonderful job with her birds and seems to be one of the lucky ones that has a knack for it. Not everyone is successful in this hobby. I love this hobby because it is so difficult...... . no one ever knows it all. I like to give Kathy a hard time because I know RN's can handle it...and besides.....she deserves it!

In case people misread me on Kathy's girls, I meant Wheaten as in color in general, and specifically to the photos I quoted.

One thing I'd certainly like to see more of, and I've yet to see except for in ONE Blue Wheaten one time, is color in the tail. And I mean more than just a little shafting. (color as in blue or black)

I've seen nice color in the rest of the body over all, but, the tail is one of those reasons I just sold my Wheatie boys and kept the girls for the Buff breeding. Lack of black is a nice step forward for that.

You can use it, just be choosey of the offspring. The blue will make khaki go platinum, so it will still appear sort of the same - Dun I'm not sure but I'd imagine it turns it a more greyish color, so I'd say just aim for the more proper Buffs or the darker Buffs as they mature and cull the rest. Look in the tails especially, towards the shaft of the feather. If it is a nice chocolatey color, or dark, or orangey red, I'd say it is safe and doesn't carry blue. If it is very pale, a lavender-esque color, or the sorts - I'd cull it.

Also, blue affects gold coloration, so the ones carrying blue may also in general appear a lighter buff.

Cool- thanks! What I tought was 5 boys and 1 girl ended up being 6 boys

Since I am going to have a dedicated roo house over the winter anyway, I will probably keep at least one that I could use if I want. Dixieland is going to start making splits not far from me, so we could even swap some here and there if all goes well.

Didn't think a propagator like you would mind if I run down the color of your birds and we haven't had a good fight for a year or so.....
