I have a March hatched lav hen that I is looking to be be really nice, but I'm wondering when on earth do Am start laying??

Thanks! I like him pretty well!

To answer your question....She may wait til spring now if she hasn't started laying already since the onset of shorter days with winter is upon us. You can try putting her under lights, but it's probably not worth it for just a few birds. Usually 6-10 months, with 8-9 being pretty common, but shorter days messes them up if it coincides with the start of lay.

Thank you for the answer. I was wondering the same thing. I figured it would be spring since they haven't started yet and the days are soooo short right now.

Finally got around to taking better pictures of my new birds, so I thought I'd share them. Well, I got better pictures of Basil anyway, Lucille is incredibly hard to photograph. Now that my leghorn is gone she's the most alert and flighty bird in the flock. The whole time I'm outside she keeps an eye on me and frequently goes back into the run when I go outside. On the bright side, she also saw the neighborhood hawk from the tractor while they were still in quarantine and told everyone else about it, so that aloof nature will come in handy this winter.

The best picture I could get of Lucille, heading back to the run

ok I have to show off this egg. I know it is the wrong category but good grief this egg is pretty! It is from a hatchery EE. She always lays vibrant eggs but this is just ridiculous! lol I only used my iphone to take the pic and did not tweak color at all.

Anybody in TN area interetsed in some free Christmas project (cuckoo split for lav) chicks, PM me. I am only setting a dozen, hoping to keep about 3. I am buried in (beautiful) juvenile marans and orps right now, but I have to get this part of the Am project out of the way.

I've narrowed down the buff boys to one decent breeder and a back up that is impossible to photograph. One of the others dissappeared along with a faverolle during the monsoon last week. I think they got washed away.
This is the same bird- he's from Meredith eggs. He does have decent leg color, but its washed out by the morning sun here.

Good thing you live so far away, cause he might just turn up at my house one day!

I ended up with NO buff rooster since the one I picked to keep developed feather stubs on his legs

I could kick myself for not keeping a back up rooster, but I was so short on pen space! I decided to go ahead and start the process of improving egg color using my Pips & Peeps wheaten rooster. I set 8 eggs from my two buff girls and all 8 are growing on day 6

I will need a good buff rooster come June next year when the pullets from this hatch start laying. Sure hope I don't end up with mostly boys like I did with my Meredith/Pips & Peeps hatch
