I have set my expectations on our pullets no sooner than 9 months. This way, I'm never disappointed, and often surprised! If your girls have nice bright red combs, it could be within the next few days/weeks. Hang in there!

Oh- I know how it is. The wheatens have been on my short list for some time because they just don't seem to pull thier weight around here. They're so pretty though- I have just downsized instead. You're doing great work with the lavs though.

Yes!!! I love the feather color of the Wheaties in the flock more than their laying ability. Plus, I get better egg color from our Blacks and current Lav Pullet. I even thought of keeping the Wheaties to help Karen Allen (chickenstalker here) on her Lav Wheaten project, but it just derails me from my own goals/projects. ADD + chicken addiction is NOT a good combo!

I have some blacks that haven't laid a single egg yet. Oh wait, they all turned out to be roos. Well, the lavs the same hatch date haven't laid yet either. I refuse to figure out how old they are cuz they are too pretty for the stock pot and I'm pretty sure they are older than I vowed I would hold on to a non-contributor to the household food supplies.

Sure do hate to hear that. The WBS definitely need a lot of work. All the more reason why we need some dedicated folks to help out. But I can certainly understand and relate to your frustrations.

God Bless,

If only I had the money... I'd be all over your BW/W flock, Muggs (if they aren't already spoken for). I know they aren't very productive, but I am willing to deal with that, personally. I am trying to get a 3rd line (I have some of Peachick's stock/offspring and John Blehm's line) to fix a few flaws I have (small hens and white fluff on the tail base of the boys).

I also just bought my first black Ameraucana hen today! She's the start to my Lav project. I, too, want to work on Lav Wheatens. Since I just started acquiring my flock (who knew chickens could cost so much), I won't be ready to actually do much until the end of 2012, it looks like.

Anyone close have a nice type/color Lav cockerel/roo they want to donate to my cause? Maybe a few hatching eggs, too? LOL.

I want to share pics of the new girl... Hopefully tomorrow.

A little bit of good news on my Lav project. My first split from my Smith hens laid her first egg and it is a true blue, inside and outside of the shell match! It makes me hope my Lav/ Self-blue Shaffer cock isn't carrying any brown pigment genes, and her sisters will do the same.
