I wonder if there is any way we could get a smiley that has a little airplane flying right over it's head. Cuz this is so over my head. I am reading and reading and wanting so badly to understand. lol Maybe after 10 years of breeding chickens and reading this board I might begin to see daylight.

Right now I feel very accomplished that I sort of understand blue/black/splash.

Sorry that it is difficult for you.I did try to keep it simple but what seems simple to me is difficult for you.I really am trying to pass on what I have learned. You younger breeders are the future of the breed.Keep asking when you don't get it.There was a time when I didn't get it also.In time it will start to make sense.I will continue to add pictures as they seem to help.

Just a reminder to everybody- many of the grocery stores have the bags of cranberries on clearance now that the holidays are over. Great winter snacks for the birds! Just remember that you gave them some when you find red poop.

Since we are on the topic of color- I had a surprise chick in my Christmas hatch of lav cuckoo projects. I though I must have mixed up some eggs or something because I got one of the brown chipmunk chicks. Well- 4 weeks later and she's almost solid blue. But a strange blue- almost blue-voilet . I have never had a chipmink grow out t be solid like that

Pictures please? I would like to see that too!

Since Jean posted pics of her silvers I will talk about my silver impovement project.Let me start by explaining the close relationship between wheaten and BB red.The males are the same color only the females differ.Silver duckwing is the silver counterpart.Light brown and silver are similar with the males having a black stripe in the hackle and saddle feathers. So we are dealing with the basic wild pattern with slight variations. The silvers that I have need better size and type.So last year I crossed blue wheaten over silver hens the resulting pullets are are now laying so I just added a silver rooster to the pen. These pullets are pure for red/gold due to the sex linked nature of red/gold and silver. They are also intermediate between wheaten and light brown.Pictures another day as it is rainy today. So by doing the silver over these pullets the resulting pullets this year will be pure for silver.I know many of you are thinking this can't be true but it is.Many of you with experience already know this. The genes will segregate per Mendal's law.So 25% will be pure for the striped chick pattern. These are the ones I will keep. The cockerels will carry genes for silver and gold.By selecting striped chicks I will eliminate the wheaten gene.Jean used black for improvement and has made great progress. This is just another route to the same goal. Some of my pullets carry blue wheaten. So as a bonus there will be some blue silver result.I will keep you posted as this project progresses. The first chicks to hatch from this in about 6 weeks.Just a little bit early but the cull chicks will go to the sale barn as easter eggers.
Wanted to ask acouple questions? I was reading on ABC about the discussion on what type of "silver" the ameraucana should be. I would ask over there but I am still waiting for my membership, anyway. Is that what is wanted to have the striping in the hackles and the saddle?
I was also wondering if there is anybody else still working on the blue silver variety? This is something I am really interested in working with and wanted to know where this project stands?

I'll get some tomrrow- my camera doesn't work at night at all. Congrats on the chicks! We must have been posting at the same time and I missed it.

I'd be awful curious to see the pics too...I hatched a chipmunk chick out of my blue / black bantam Faverolles flock a couple weeks ago, so far the wing feathers are coming super dark blue / black....

My computer shut off... I have so lost my train of though..... Lavs..... I am going to put my Lav Pullet with my VERY HANDSOME black roo I got from Lori. My question is do you think they would be ok on our cold nights with just two birds in the coop? I can put them in my shop they would be out of the weather and I can control the light. I think most of the eggs I have collected for the next hatch are hers and she is in with her brother and I want to move her. I don't have any extra brown egg layers I could put with them... all the others are EE and most of my EE lay blue slight green egg and I am afraid I would not know her eggs. I have several eggs in the hatcher the same color as that the Lav came from...

As long as they have perches and a bit of circulation they'll be fine in a coop with just the 2 of them.

Cloverleaf- funny thing is if the egg my mystery chick came from wasn't one fo my lavs, it's mom is 1/2 faverolle. Now that I think about it- mine could be an olive egger, but still strange it was chipmunk at first becasue none of its parts (wheaten am, faverolle, blue copper marans) would have chicks like that. Oy!
