Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have a question. Are the Blue Silvers a result of blues over silver or could they possibly come from Lavs? I know stupid question, but I was going to try a project with one of my roos, just because I think he's such a pretty bird. He can from Lavender eggs, so should have been a cull and I just love him. He's different then the Blue Silver but similar, head is much darker.

I was going to rehome him, but now I think I still want to keep him, I'm just not sure what I should do, but if he's worth keeping, I'd like to. Thing is I have a lot of birds and was trying to figure out who to let go and figured I'd get rid of some of my favorites first, so the others would be easier. OK, well it made sense to me at the time.

I'm going to see if I can catch him long enough to get a better pic of him, but this is him for now.

The roo on the bottom is a blue (not lavender) with silver leakage in the hackles. He'd still be fine for EEs or OEs, unless you want to work on a birchen project. I usually keep my best-personality culls to use for projects like that. Some of them are so hard to let go of.

I came home to a brand new Lav AM (my first Ameraucana) chick but it didn't finish closing up after absorbing the yolk sac.... does it stand a chance? Sorry, pics are graphic. I applied some Vetericyn to prevent infection. The chick is 3 days late in hatching but I am wondering if I had my dates wrong. Nothing else hatched out of that batch and I haven't seen anything weird in my temps. It is chirping and moving around. I have it on rubber shelf liner in the bator.

Thank you,
Julie

Awww- poor lil thing! I have had chicks hatch that had such a fat belly they fell over backwards for 2 days until they absorbed the yolk. Hope she pulls through and you get some buddies soon!

I had several like that and I don't think I put anything on them except for regular neosporin (you should not use the kind with pain killer) once and then kept it on clean towels changed 2x/day, until the spot healed up. keep it off an abrasive surface.

Hello ya'll
I have been reading away at this thread intermittently for weeks LOL maybe even longer I didn't keep track.........but I 'm finally caught up. YAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!
Anyway I started reading because I want blue egg layers, I got fooled on some EE's as well who are very pretty and nice, but my first clue didn't happen until Filleene started laying me a nice Tan Pink with white speckled egg......they were marked Ameracaunas at TSC and I picked 3 got 2 roos and 1 hen anyway, was awaiting my first blue egg in vain....... argggg, I would of even been happy with a green egg.........so I have been looking around since August in vain to find me some locally grown Ameracaunas to start having some blue eggs. I have a mixed flock I couldn't decide what breeds I wanted and who would lay best too many conflicting stories ect. so I ordered 5 each of BO, SS, Delawares, BR, Wyandottes, Ancona's, well never did get my Ancona's which turns out was ok my neighbor did and i really don't like them now hers are mean. But out of that lot I got 11 hens the rest roosters, so went to TSC and bought 3 BSL because they are notable layers and 3 Ameracaunas NOT.......so out of my REPLACEMENT ORDER WITH THE PACKING PEANUTS THEY SENT OF WR, i HAD 43 CHICKENS AND 34 ROOSTERS, Not counting my chicks from TSC....... and I still have no beautiful blue eggs... I also love the look of these chickens I think they are awesome and remind me of a hawk with a beard.LOL Even my EE Fileene here.
So anyone here in Wisconsin? I really really want some real Blue eggers...... I found a lady sorta close on the Ameracauna web site, I have emailed her , but so far not heard anything back...... so I;m still searching for some spring chicks or pullets, I would like maybe 8, and no roosters if I can help it, I had enough of roosters for a weeee bit,. plus I have 2 good ones to use for my girls that I want more of, which are my Dels, and SS.......so anyone who can help me out here I sure would appreciate that. I don't want to show them they don';t have to be perfect, they just have to lay me some pretty blue eggs. I don't at this time plan to breed them, so if they don't meet standard I don't care, other than for blue eggs. Later on if I like them more than the other breeds I may switch to all Ameracaunas, but so far I'm undecidedly undecided..... Thanks for listening to my gripes and story and I hope to post here often if I can just find me some chicks/pullets. Kim

Hi GhostRider, I had a similar rooster hen ratio in the eggs I hatched out last year.

It was VERY frustrating!!!

I hope we both have better luck this year. Glad you found this group, I am sure someone will be able to help you find your blue eggs.

Well today I am setting eggs for my first hatch of my own pure Ameraucana eggs.

I am really pleased with how my pullets are laying once they finally all started! I am a bit disappointed in the colors half of them are laying. My two Blk/lav split pullets are laying the bluest eggs!! My other two pullets, one blue the other black are both laying eggs closer to olive green.

I am going to hatch them out anyway, I will have to work on egg color in my future generations. I will be setting 16-20 ameraucana eggs depending on how many of the girls lay today, I would wait for more, but I have some cochin eggs I have to set or they will be to old. I can't wait to see what my F1 generation will look like!

Can anyone tell me what the incubation time is on these beautiful chicks? I have a few blue eggs to put in my incubator, my friend said she thought hers hatched earlier than the 21 days.

Judy, my Ameraucana usually hatch before my Cochin eggs that are set with them. I have a very accurate Brinsea 190 set at 99.5 and will often have the Ameraucana hatching on day 20. My Lavs also tend to hatch a bit earlier than my Black/Blue.

Since you're in Wisconsin, contact Mike Gilbert (on the ABC site). If there's a possibility of breeding Ams later on, you might as well start with some really nice birds to get a truer idea of what they are going to be like, and Mike's birds are awesome! ;)

Filleene is really striking bird! I wish she laid the blue egg you're wanting, too.
But at least realize that a chicken that lays the color eggs she does is harder to predictably find than a blue egg layer. And now you know a breeder from whom you can reliably get a blue egg layer (Just be sure to ask Mike about the egg color of the particular line you're buying from.), so it's kinda cool you can soon have both.
