Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have a question about my lavender x split chicks that just hatched. What does it indicate as far as genetics that both black split hens produced black chicks (not carrying the lavender gene?) and that 3 of the chicks are black with cream and have silver guard hairs and one is solid black with silver guard hairs? I attached a picture so you can see what I am talking about. The other chicks are my first hatch from my wheaten Pips & Peeps rooster x Paul Smith hens.

Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

SD_Paulo, if you have some Blue Wheaten girls in your flock you should expect to hatch a percentage of BWs, but because your roo is Wheaten and you have other Wheaten hens in your flock you may not hatch that many. Or you might hatch a lot, it just depends on what the roll of genetic dice gives you.

That is what I assumed too. But does the Cock have to be W/BW split to throw BW?

I came home to a brand new Lav AM (my first Ameraucana) chick but it didn't finish closing up after absorbing the yolk sac.... does it stand a chance? Sorry, pics are graphic. I applied some Vetericyn to prevent infection. The chick is 3 days late in hatching but I am wondering if I had my dates wrong. Nothing else hatched out of that batch and I haven't seen anything weird in my temps. It is chirping and moving around. I have it on rubber shelf liner in the bator.

Thank you,
Julie

I would put a "NuSkin" bandage on it! ! ! ! ! CVS or Walmart might carry it....

This has been seen before on BYC. One chick had some intestines outside the body. Make some saline/salt water less than 1/2 tsp per cup. Apply with q-tip to open area. Use a bandage to pull the surfaces together. Or if you can sew a purse string suture to help apply pressure to pull the skin together but keep it wet with diluted salt water.

The person with the above problem chick helped it heal in one week.

Thank you for the advice. It seems to be closing up pretty rapidly. The chick is still chirping up a storm. Unfortunately it looks like it will be all alone. Once it's doing better I can put it in with some week old silkies but I checked the other eggs and there was sign of life. Bummer. I think my humidity was too low, their air sacs are just way too big and the chicks didn't ever pip the air cell (from the looks of it). Back to the drawing board. I thought I'd been keeping my humidity too high.

I am going to continue with the Vetericyn to prevent infection.

My buddy and I had a bad hatch due to electricity outage when no one was home and no one can determine length of outage. One little lonly polish bantam is alive and chirping for company. Will need pysch care when "she" gets older.
