Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Kim,
My blue ist eggs came from PipsandPeeps through Jeremy in Oakland but I have been told the Paul Smith babies I had shipped last Spring came from blue eggs too & I am getting some nice blue eggs from that pen of pullets. I have pullets from several other breeders that I hatched last Spring Cindy Aultman, Robin Davis, Christin Kitsch, Harry Shaffer & they all came from green eggs so I don't expect anything different from them but I can always hope....LOL
As far as roosters co habitating. A breeder friend of mine was over & suggested I separate everybody out & make a rooster pen to draw from for breeding. A large pen I had already had 9 cockerels from last Spring in it so we pulled all the pullets out & added in several more roosters all at once. There was alittle bit of fighting but nothing too bad & they quickly settled down with no more problems. She said the key was to add many at once & they don't know who to fight......LOL It worked & now I have a "Rooster Pen"

He said because the girls are allowed to grow out without the nonsense and harassment so common with the young males. Troy said that he found sometimes, the girls didn't reach their full potential when constantly working to steer clear of the boys.

Nonsense is right. I have eight 5 month cockerels of various breeds that I am gonna stick all together. I have had enough of the nonsense. I will do it Thursday evening cuz I will be home Friday morning. I am going to move them all to a diff pen so no one has home turf advantage. I will trim their nails and smooth off the point of their beaks. I own a salon and do nails so that is right up my alley. Lol!
I'll let ya all know how it goes.

I had a shed at the old place I grew my boys out in. I don't have that shed now... I had to convert a dog kennel attached to the garage into my rooster pen. It's about 10x20 with two dog houses and it's covered with tarps. My bantam Cochins are housed by gender and I'll use the rooster I want to breed with at that time with the girls. I will eventually need a new coop for them - to many colors, not enough space to separate the girls at the moment. Yeah, I discovered awhile ago that a rooster pen is the best way to go.

Ok everyone I need some advice this is the guy who I emailed the other day about his AM, birds this what he sent me and these are the birds deal or no? I'm also worried about adding adult birds, I have a clean area and coop, no chicks have been here but my day olds, and I sure don't need anything brought in. It seems weird to me the female would be molting in Wis, in February all my neighbors chickens did that in late oct... and laid all winter after the molt...... what do ya all think are these even AM's? not much beard at all if I haven't gone blind.....

Heres what he wrote me...
Hello! Thanks for contacting me. Right now, I have either a pair or trio of blue ameraucanas. They all came directly from Jerry DeSmidt and Jake Hendzel (Woodhaven is their farm name) in Pulaski. I do raise them and have been for a few years. They lay green eggs. If you are looking at showing these birds they are more of breeder birds than they are for showing purposes. They have produced very nice chicks including a few best of breeds and Reserve Champion Large fowl at some of my shows. If you are looking at them for laying purposes, they are currently molting or coming back from a molt so they are not laying at this moment. Before their molt I would get one egg per hen every day. I have a picture of one of the females attached which is the first one. The other female that would be part of the trio is a little bit darker in color than she is. Remember, I am selling either a pair or trio so that means they are being sold with a male. The male is a gentile bird and hasn't caused me any problems. He is partialy blind in one eye, but still does fine here and has still produced many wonderful offspring since I have had him. If you want to know any more please let me know. A pair is $30 and a trio is $45. Thanks!

They are indeed the real deal but I personally would never breed the female shown there. Her beard/muffs are lacking to the point that I bet she's missing an allele, and may pass on clean-faced birds if paired with a male also missing an allele. It happens and sadly often with Blues.

If you just want pretty pets or something though, sure, they're great.

As lovely as he is (and look at those spurs!!!) that "partially blind in one eye" comment got my attention. That could mean he's had a problem with disease in the past (causing the blindness) and may be a carrier of something you don't want to bring home. (That also came up at the clinic with Troy Laroche this weekend .... )

What are Allele? don't think I remember hearing that word before.
I said I didn't think they had any beards, though the boy does have some I think my EE GrayBeard is actually prettier and has more beard, what do you think here he is at almost 11 months and 22 weeks..the one at 22 weeks is the 1 on the grass, he is the rooster for my mixed layers, my single hens, WW, SLW, BO,and EE's

forgot to add I also want blue eggs not green though, I guess I take that chance even with a true AM? right or did i hear that wrong..... I also wondered is it true that an EE rooster with pea comb carries the blue egg gene?

Some Ameraucanas do lay a greenish egg. Most Buffs do, and some Blue/Blacks do. One of my first Blues/Blacks gave me about 50% greenish eggs and the rest laid blue eggs.

Allele - A copy of a gene/trait. Each trait or gene out there has two copies. So for example Blue is actually one copy of the blue gene, while Splash is two copies. Lavender is two copies of the Lavender gene, while one copy just shows black since it is recessive.

So, a bird with one beard/muffs allele will either have a partial beard and muffs or it will have a medium sized beard and hardly any muffs as shown on the blue girl there.

The pair shown obviously have beards, they just aren't genetically pure for it.
