Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

And how old is he anyway? The spurs give you a clue. You may buy yourself some fertility issues due to advanced age. I would have to agree that day old chicks are a better choice.

Is anybody else wondering how much Greenfire Farms is paying for this full frontal assault advertising that is currently going on on my computer screen? LOL

Unless you are planning to work on brown reds, nah.

This depends, how often do you see them. If they are xtremely uncommon, or it's the only of many, use him. Many say rid of the red. But that red actually corresponds with green sheen on blacks. If one is used every couple generations you will keep good sheen. But if you don't you will eventually lose the good sheen. This is how we kept good sheen on our Sumatras .

Thank you guys very much for the info, I just don't feel like being duped again, I want some pretty blue egg layers, not an old rooster with a so so hen, that to me even doesn't seem AM enough LOL, I also really love the splash coloring, and not so crazy about the blacks/blues, I really am partial to the ones that seem almost hawk like.....LOL they are so very cool looking.....

MY EE roo is a nice color that's why I kept him for the mixed flock plus he is a very good protector and is good to the girls, shows them where to lay their eggs and sometimes sits with them when they lay, he isn't mean either just a bit standoffish if you want to trim his nails.., I will also probably add to his pen my BSL, wonder what kinda mixed babies I'll end up with from that mix. if anyone goes broody, I won't hatch any eggs from that pen, at all they are my layers for my eggs and maybe a few dozen to sell, but if 1 of them hens wants babies she can hatch me some replacements if she wants too.......
TY all again for your help. some days I just feel so defeated about getting the birds I want, seems that my expensive taste, also comes with a wait or very long drive to get what I want. The lady I was hoping would write back and is listed with the registry must no longer raise these guys, because she never did reply to my mail. :(...... Kim

Thanks to those who replied on "why separate males from females". That is what I was thinking. That it had to do with growth rate and stress.

To the person who was asking about the Blues. I don't breed Blues so I'm not an expert on them. Having said that, they look pretty nice to me and the email the person sent you sounds good. The folks he got his birds from are legit.

As for the female with the beard that's lacking fullness, personally, I wouldn't worry too much about that and it wouldn't keep me from breeding her. The beard gene is dominant so it wouldn't take but a couple of years of heavy culling to get homozygous beard genes. There's a whole lot more things I'd put up as a priority over that.

God Bless,

About the photographs sent by the person selling either a pair or trio: When my blue hen moulted this year she looked pretty dismal. Strangely enough, it started with her beard and muffs. I thought one of the other birds pulled them out. Everything's since grown back in and her beard and muffs went back to the profuse glory of the pre-moult days. That said, I knew what she looked like before they fell out. Perhaps the person selling them can provide you with a different picture? I agree with other folks that the day-old chicks are likely a better bet, though.
