Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Want to hear heartbreaking? I bought John Blehm lined W/BW from a local person awhile ago. The Pullets: One is 6 months, one is about 5 months and the other about 4 months. I actually lost three other chicks with the 5 month old pullet. The 6 month old one has a crossed beak. Not bad, but it's there. I just noticed it today! I've had her since she was a couple days old! The 4 month old one has yellow legs. The 5 month old one has a missing toe nail from a brooder mishap. Set back? Yes. Disappointed? Yes. They were my only three pullets and only one is keepable. All 4 of the boys have to much white fluff at the base of their tails and smudged coloring. So, that's 6 Ameraucanas I have to cull.

Nothing like trying to start a really nice flock and have so much go wrong with your 'foundation'. Shipped eggs may be a gamble and only 30-50% hatch for me, but I have yet to have these many issues with the chicks I hatch.

I'll be shopping for BW/W eggs in about 3 weeks (incubator is full), so if anyone has a waiting list or something, let me know. I may even be able to do a partial trade if anyone is looking for Peachick's lines to add to their flock. It seems the girls are going to start laying - Finally!

pips & peeps -- I have to get some updated pictures for you. I have 2 MONSTER black cockerels - HUGE boys and very nice so far at almost 11 weeks and Jean, my light blue, IS a cockerel - so Gene. He's a goof. VERY friendly. Total lap bird. Competes with my Silkie for lap time and petting.

Kelly is a GORGEOUS blue pullet - REALLY impressive muffs and beard (also an affection freak and VERY talkative) and Sally, the black pullet, shyest of the bunch, not at all touchy feely. I'm delighted with all 5 of them. I think you'll be pleased.

I can't get over the size of the 2 black cockerels. They are bigger than my Marans!! Monster boys. (Which is VERY good because my Ameraucanas need size.) Legs on them like elephants. BIG!

I'm in the process of building additional pens. Can't wait to get all these youngsters moved in and producing!!!!

AWWWWW I'm about to cry I feel terrible for you.......... Wishing you much better luck in the future though...... can you actually eat your culls, I heard there isn't anything on a AM carcase? is that true or are they like any other no meat bird?
What kind of chcken is in your Avatar? what a pretty bird.......

I will either rehome them, put them in my EE pen for eggs or eat them (boys will be eaten). I have had 14wk olds processed and they didn't have much meat on them. It doesn't matter to me - they all go in the crockpot.

My avvie is Mildred. She's a Calico/Mille Fleur project bantam Cochin pullet.

She's gorgeous is she your only 1 that color so far or is there more, she looks almost like a millie, cochin.. or a swedish flower, is that what your trying to get? cool idea and cool chicken..

Thread hijacking...

I have a few, mostly boys. I have two nearly year old pullets and at least one pullet in the grow out pen. I have three nearing year old cockerels and about three young cockerels in the grow out pen. I also have mottled, black, Columbians (basic, blue and buff). We are trying to breed true Mille Fleur colored bantam Cochins. Go check out the Mille Fleur Cochin thread if you want to know more. ;)

Now, back to the Ameraucanas...
Thanks to Cindy, I just set my first batch of Lav/splits! I also set my first BW/W Ameraucana egg of 2012 from my girls! YAY!

It took us forever to get our wheaten flock together. Clean faces were the biggest problem we've seen in the wheaten variety.
Still working on productivity, but we will have eggs eggs available at the end of February. No directly Blehm birds here- just a combination of Ribbeck, Tailfeathers, Ramey, Meredith, and Peachick. I am only keeping a very short wait list because last year got too confusing, so let me know a.s.a.p.

The birds are looking great Barngoddess!

I have had to delay my silver project breeding now because of yellow skin. I purchased a cock bird two years ago from another breeders line because my boy just dropped dead.

Imagine my surprise when I had chicks with green legs pop out when I bred him to his daughters.

I have to test breed all the birds I have decided to keep now. It's such a pain since the yellow skin is recessive.

I also had this happen in another line when I purchased outside stock...

Robin, this is EXACTLY what I was talking about on the Welsummers Forum and why NOT to outcross unless absolutely necessary.

I rest my case!

God Bless,
