I'm still waiting for my egg color chart to come in. I'm really trying to understand Ameraucana egg color. I've gotten eggs from several different people and I still always see a green tint to the eggs. Maybe it's just how my brain perceives it, and so maybe I'll never see a true blue egg.

Also, with my BBS eggs, when the hens first started laying the eggs looked a chalky green to me, but as the weeks have passed, I see a change in their color. It's almost as though the shells are greenish, but the blue pigment didn't come in till after some time. Do you think this to be generally true or is it it just my eggs?

When I collect eggs these days, I'm somewhat surprised when I see the change in egg color. I imagine they will eventually return to their base color. I think I had an unrealistic idea about the color of ameraucana eggs because of all the pretty pictures that are posted in some auctions. I know now that those pictures were taken when the eggs were at their peak and only of the very best ones, so not a true representation of the eggs being sold.

My BBS , here were the very first eggs laid:

This is what they look like now:

I took these pictures (unedited except for cropping/resizing)) in my dark pantry, under the same conditions, so I could have a good comparison.

Hi 'neighbor'!

In the top photo, the 3 eggs on the right (1) and lower right (2) look more green to me. The center top egg being the best blue color to my eye. Your egg color has progressed to the blue side of the chart, IMO. The eggs in the lower photo are very pretty.

If I didn't already have a pen full. lol!! Maybe try hatching only the ones that look the bluest to your eye. You may develop a strain all your own.

I see these are blue to teal....soooo it might be your eyes. (I know I have a gray/green color mix up in my brain, so I no longer buy gray shirts cuz they look greenish to me and I hate green)

Everyone does percieve color differently...and your egg colors look wonderful on my screen.

Not to change the subject from the all the seasonally-appropriate talk of eggs and chicks, but I have a question for those of you who process your culls for meat. I did debate posting this over in the meat bird section, and if anyone feels that would be a more appropriate place to ask just let me know and I'll move it over there. We have only done four chickens now, and the first one, a leghorn, went very smoothly. The last three have all been EE and one Ameraucana and were horrible experiences. It seems that we are having a hard time getting through the feathers in the beard/muffs when we make the cut. Is this a common problem? And does anyone who processes bearded birds regularly have any suggestions?

Make the cut behind/under the birds left earlobe, any where else and it is just a mess. You should not be cutting through the beard....
Behind/under left ear is the vein that goes from body to head....
behind/under right ear is the one from head to body.
if you cut the right one the blood builds in the head area and does not pump out fast enough to not coagulate (clot).
if you cut the left one then it is direct from heart to out and fast pumping so no clotting and fast and clean culling.

edited cuz i stink at typing/spelling
