Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Again, I apologize but I don't see any of this as pointless. Egg colour DOES matter. Egg colour is one of the major features (breed characteristics) of Ameraucanas.

As long as your bird doesn't happen to lay an egg in front of the judge nobody is going to know what colour egg they lay except you. So as long as your rooster doesn't lay an off colour egg in front of the judge - you'll be fine.

Sportsmanship obviously enters into this. Cheating/lying/faking/deliberate deception is not valued or appreciated in the show ring.

Uhhhh.... wow ......uhm that post of mmine was supposed to be light hearted and humerous, but since you pointed this out, and I THOUGHT every one on here knew this fact.....uhhhh as far as I know roosters do not lay eggs.

However, I agree deception is wrong, but if one IS being honest then how is it deception?

And so now we have come full circle - and it becomes repetitive. I originally objected because someone suggested there wasn't anything wrong with presenting a white egg laying hen at a show as an Ameraucana. If you know your bird lays a white egg you are being deceptive if you attempt to enter it as an Ameraucana because one of the major breed characteristics of Ameraucanas are their blue eggs. You may be working on trying to improve your birds but you obviously aren't there yet if your "Ameraucana" is not producing at least the beginnings of a blue egg. And I don't believe I'm the only one that thinks egg colour matters because birds have been disqualified at shows for laying incorrectly coloured eggs. Not just worth some points but worth ALL the points.

Can my girls show a splash colored Ameracuana hen in a 4-H show? I know it's not a recognized color, but it's a color we like. We are joining 4-H in the next few weeks when we get the flyers through school. Thanks. The other colors we may start with are black and blue. If none are show quality, we will try again with the wheaten, blue wheaten color. We prefer a more social bird as we handle them everyday.

We decided showing what we have now if possible is the way to go. And what vaccinations do I need for my showing chickens?

Thank you.

You can absolutely show unrecognized colours like splash! They just aren't eligible for breed awards at the shows. In fact, the ABC (Ameraucana Breeders Club) encourages members to show splash and lavender because it will help to get the colours recognized down the road.

Depends on where you are what vaccinations, if any, are required and/or recommended.

It is sad to see such animosity towards a humorous comment. its also frightening, as Ameraucanas are one of my main focuses as a starting breeder and the viciousness instead of helpfulness is scaring me off the breed all together, for example I asked a legitimate question in that post that got ignored only to have a point that has been driven home hammered on more? its a shame I have what is supposed to be the rest of my breeding stock for spring in the bator and now I am having second thoughts on the breed. Thank you.

This ^ i am also new to the breed and seeing what is being posted here i don't know if i want to be a part of it really i wanted to start my breeding program with this breed but i am reconsidering it now. I have been reading here and the Olive egger thread and it seems that those that have OE and EE have more fun! Maybe i will use the birds i ordered and join them instead seems like folks for the purebreds nit pick too much instead of being helpful and kind.

I HAVE to ask -- what's the point of having a breed standard if no one is interested in learning it, let alone following it?

Easter Eggers and Olive Eggers have no standard .....

<sigh>

It's just as frustrating for me as it is for you.
