Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I know nothing about showing. I'd like to keep 4-5 show birds if I have that many show quality out of the 17 in the bator.

Is 4-H a good place to start? I'd like to be able to move onto the ABA/APA shows, but my two girls 9 and 11 will have to do all the showing with my husband since I'm homebound. I can do all I need to do at home and that's it. I'll need to buy a small cage to get them use to sitting in there alone. I'd like to start this right away, so they are use to it. I don't want to jump into this without knowledge and I'm need to teach my kids the correct way of doing this.

What else do I need to do at home? I've only been to the state fair shows. If I do go out in public, I need a wheelchair and someone to push me. It's highly embarrassing since I'm only in my 30's and disabled from breaking my neck a few years ago. Ameracuana's are my breed of choice with the egg color, looks(I'm a sucker of muffs/beards) and temperament. I love social birds that sit on my lap and are easy to handle. I'm so much in love with this breed.

I have a set of Paul Smith's bloodlines with the Blue and Blacks. I may start over next year depending on the temperament of the ones I have. My first choice is wheaten then blue wheaten.

I will have my show birds NPIP tested at about 4 months. I will call and make my appointment to have this done after I have my set picked out. I prefer to show hens. I'm a little skeptical of roosters since they have the possibility of showing aggression. I can only keep one rooster if I choose this route, which I'm undecided at this point.

Am I on the right track? Will my girls have the opportunity to win? All they want is a ribbon and their bird to win.

That actually requires interpreting the section from the SOP quoted by one judges. Intellectual work, I know but sometimes it has to be done.

My kids are starting this year as well and i had just started my flock this past spring so all i have is hatchery stock with a few young pure breds that are not ready for showing so my kids will show hatchery stock and learn this year so next year they will be more competitive and if they win well they win lol. 4-h is an excellent place for them to start as young kids and go from there they will learn alot from what i am told by the 4-h leader and it will prepare them for the harder APA stuff.

Easter Eggers are available in Canada. Have been for years. The hatchery selling them calls them Ameraucanas as many hatcheries do but they are available. They are online and they ship.
They are out west and charge over $140 dollars to ship to Saint John - which is 2 hours away anyway. Total cost would be extreme. Already checked in on it.

ETA: Ontario. Nevermind. But I spoke with the owner on the telephone and he quoted me shipping prices. We were not looking for EEs at the time, but wanted some fancy layers for fun. Didn't order based on the total cost per chick being higher then I would ever be willing to pay.

1000

This is the image on their price list. That looks silver to me, but what do I know. I'm new.

Thank you for your help. I have no idea where to start and prepare to do this right. I don't want my kids to look like they don't know what they are doing, this will lower their self esteem and I have issues with them being very shy.

I ask more questions then my husband, but I won't be able to leave my house, preparing them from home is the best I can do.:(. I've been searching online how to do this, but I'm not finding anything. I don't want to ask the wrong questions either. I don't know where the best place to look for information either.

My husband will be taking them. The problem with this is that he does not ask questions and basically "wings it". It drives me crazy. I'm trying to get as much information online as possible. I don't want my children to know what they are doing. I'm homebound since I broke my neck, so taking them myself is iffy. My girls are really excited to start this new adventure. We are signing up for 4-H through the school flyers and with someone that shows chickens. I like to be prepared as much as possible. The Ameracuana breed is the way we are going for sure. Lockdown is today! I wish I could be the one to take them, but I'm disabled and I can't. I was hoping to find more information online.

I understand how frustrating it must be not to be able to be there but really it's not that bad 4-h is really easy on the kids and it teaches them well. They don't have to have the perfect birds at first just as long as the showmanship is there and the judge educates them at the show it should be a great experience for them. Don't stress too much on perfection just have a goal and do a little at a time. We are starting our ameraucana's in the spring as well so next year should be better for mine but this year it's Jersey Giants for them to show from hatchery stock. They are not perfect but good looking birds and my 4-h lady said to me what i have told you above.

Thank you! The meeting is in the next few weeks. How exciting. I hope my children are able to build confidence with something we all love. We all love this breed too. Thank you again for your help.:)
