Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Quote: That depends on how good you are at judging your stock, and when faults can be detected in your line. When you are getting started, it takes longer. Posting pics here and on the ABC forum can help. If you can find a local mentor familiar with the breed, even better. Judges at local APA shows can also be helpful, but I have found that some aren't overly knowledgable regarding this breed and some don't take Ameraucanas as a breed very seriously. I have found this discouraging at my local APA/ABA show.
Thank you very much! I need ALL the help I can get. Especially from home through pictures. It's very difficult for me to leave the house more then 1-2 hours at a time. I can keep a few as long as I need to, but not all. I found a quitter today, which is a total of 2 lost of 18 so far. Lockdown was yesterday, but I almost had an exploder. The smell was horrid! I'll handle every bird daily to keep them social. I love babies! And adults too. I'm one to take this very seriously! There is no one local so far to help me. I'm very new at this. I use to show dogs, but this is much different. Thank you again for your help. I appreciate every bit of it.

case in point. I asked on the looks and color of my black rooster about 30 something posts back and since then only arguing lol

I remember your question. Couldn't see the picture well enough to comment. Nor am I the most experienced breeder.

As hard as it is - just because you post a picture and ask question doesn't mean you'll get an answer. Doesn't mean folks aren't paying attention or that you aren't worthy. My advice, if you are REALLY determined to get an answer, post again, as you are. Folks will respond. And here it is ....

Leakage of any kind on a black bird is not a good thing but I couldn't really see what was going on with yours because of the picture quality. However, we all must work with what we've got!

Hi, I'm new to this thread. I have some Wheaten Ameruacana's that I hatched out from Chicken Junkies here on BYC. I looked through some of this thread and just figured out that the roo's are dark and the pullets are light

yeah for me!! (I hope that's right, lol) My husband kept telling me that the dark ones were blue wheaten, but I found that they have the grey color instead of the black, so they are not blues. Here is a picture of one. They all run from the camera like it is a death ray. I'll have to work on getting some more pictures. At what age can you tell if they should be kept or not for breading purposes? Mine are about 14 weeks old.

Wheaten and blue wheaten cockerels go through a lot of color changes. You can cull for obvious faults anytime you find them.Color will be later after he has lost his white beard.I do see some black in the hackles. Not wanted in wheaten family. He could be a dark blue wheaten since you say grey.Blue comes in many shades.Size will be the last to develope.Full weight may take 12-14 months.

I agree that there is no telling what is in the background of an ee. The bird does not look like a blue silver to me. It has an awful lot of red leakage all over the body if you enlarge the picture.

I personally would not do a project with a bird that I do not know what genes it is carrying, but that is just me.

Heatherscooby77, the person who posted this photo did not say they were the owner of the bird and just wants to know what color it is.

Kibi, this is the "Ameraucana" thread, that is why someone pointed out that the bird is an ee. There are genetics threads that general questions can be posted on about color questions.

I know they were not talking about a project. The chicken is an EE. I am saying if someone has a blue silver project, they should be allowed to talk about it on this thread. Hey, I say those are some nice EE to newbies on here that post. I am also part of the EE police!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel like some people should be nicer about it. It scares people away from the breed. We don't want that do we?

I don't even know where to begin. I already said it and I'll say it again, this thread has become very hostile and there is no learning going on because of these EE fights. I dread reading it because of the headache I get from it. My OCD requires me to read every thread I follow, so don't say I don't have to read it. I don't, but it would literally drive me nuts if I didn't.

Sadly, we will always have people who will be misinformed because the hatcheries breed and mislabel their EEs every day. Then, the people buying them from the hatcheries breed them and sell them mislabeled. It will never end until 1) the hatcheries tell the truth about what they are breeding and 2) people are smart enough to read before asking what color their Ameruacana is when it's actually an EE. I have only been doing the chicken thing for a little over a year. I've learned a lot, but still don't know everything. I will say this, I took the time to research what I had and improved since then.

I am irritated that some of the people on the forum say project colors have no place on this forum. And getting an attitude and mentioning posting about Silkies and Marans is just as ridiculous as the people with the issues with project colors. Why so much hostility? Can we just post that said bird is a EE, send them to the EE thread and the ABC site so they can educate themselves? All this fighting is really grating my nerves. It's almost as bad as my 8 and 10yr old nitpicking over complete BS. "She touched me!" "He touched me first!" "No I didn't! She's lying!" "He started it!" OMG. Don't make me separate you!

Seriously, though. Can we please stop the insanity and get back to the help and learning?
Thanks!

I traded a few of my eggs for another breeders chicks and the chicks are now a month+. One of the pullets is one of those mostly white BW/Ws anomalies that pop up. No one really answered the original poster's question about if anyone has kept and used any of these birds in their projects. So, since I have had one cockerel hatched from my own flock and then this pullet from another flock, I am wondering again if anyone has kept and used any of these birds. I am going to keep her, just because I am curious and what's one extra Ameraucana (of course the way this thread is going, I guess she's an EE)?

Also, wheaten is recessive, right? If I bred them to a chocolate, the offspring would be solid chocolate and black (or possibly mauve if blue wheaten x chocolate)? I don't plan on working on that project, but I was wondering how that would work in case I do decide to. I have an extra/back-up chocolate Orp I am debating about where I am going to put him...

Quote: Isn't that the truth! I am now researching, sending out emails, planning, researching, planning to get my third batch of marans from a different breeder because NONE of the first two batches of marans (2 different breeders) I raised had even one cockerel keeper! I am planning my next chicken processing day and I have 11 cockerels that I was advised to cull! *whisper* I am gonna keep a couple tho cuz they're pretty*
That is pretty harsh isn't it? lol... Maybe we need to start a "not good enough marans" thread... I would be the top poster and wouldn't have to butcher all my birds!

My Ameracauna eggs are hatching! I have 3 piping and peeping! I'll post pictures when they hatch. I really want a splash even though they are not a recognized color. We'll still show in 4-H the splash color if allowed. I'm excited as this is the breed of my dreams. These first few were not cheap eggs either, they better not be Easter eggers for the price I paid.
