Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have Black and Lavender Ameraucanas. And after trying to restrain myself and failing, I am looking at getting Blues and Wheatens. Can someone give me a crash course. I know that I can use the Blacks to improve the Lavenders, resulting in some splits. And Black and Blues give me more Blacks and Blues but BlueXBlue can give me Splash. The Wheaten's need to be bred separate, correct?

I guess I need to narrow down my focus but they are all so lovely! And we have an awesome market for the blue eggs. The number of roosters needed as breeders is my only concern.

I probably won't be looking to breed the Lavs until next spring. I have two Lav roos that I am currently growing out. I'll try to get pictures this weekend. Can anyone give me a priority list of traits to select/cull for? With the Laves being a project breed I get that color would be towards the top of the list but I would say these two are very similar in color right now. There looks to be some tan in both of their hackles but I keep praying its just dirt.

Thanks!

Okay, back to the experts again :)

I hatched out (with the help of a friend with an incubator) 4 little wheaten Ameraucana (LF) chicks this past weekend. Two hatched last Friday and two in the early morning hours of Sunday. The latest to hatch sadly didn't make it through Monday AM.

Anyway - here are pics of the three remaining chicks. Anyone care to expound on pullet vs cockerel at this ripe young age? I have some opinions, but as a relative newbie to these guys, I'll just keep 'em to myself for a bit. lol

So...here is the 5 day old chick:

Here is the first of the two (nearly) one week old chicks:

Here is the second of the two nearly one week old chicks:

For comparison sake, here is a pic of the two one week old chicks side by side:

And, finally, one of all three from above (youngest of the three is at the top, one week old chick #1 is at 3:00, and one week old chick #2 is at 6:00:

Please share what you base your opinion on so I can learn. TIA

Thanks!

Tough question! If colour is your focus, leakage is a problem. I'm a B/B/S girl first but truth be told, I prefer the self-blue feather. Lacing is too dang complicated! I'll leave that to Christie in Hawaii. I can't comment on Wheatens but I do know that blacks are recommended to improve all sorts of things in lavenders not the least of which is feather quality. I am not an experienced lavender breeder but my plan is to put my lavender pullets with my black cock focusing on type and size. F1 will all be split. Take the best of those (continuing to focus on type and size) and hope for lavenders in F2. Move forward from there but I'm also one who believes regular injections of black into a lavender pen is crucial because of the issues that come with the lavender gene. (And I've also been told not to let my black lavender splits sneak into my blue pen.)

I do know I have a "leaky" lavender split in my Silkie pen. He won't be part of my breeding program. Leakage is never good.

Neat. I just filled out the ABC/APA form and will be sending in my membership. Hopefully this will help the kids and I to become more educated. :)
