Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I got him with my very first group of chicks I ever bought. Just someone about an hour from me here who was selling what she had hatched, not a real breeder, just someone with backyard chickens. They were advertised as Ameraucanas but I always assumed he was an EE. He had a great personality too. When I saw your post I had to look up a photo of him to compare.

Your birds are probably carrying the barred gene. I know my flock was and I have removed it finally this year. I started by only keeping the pullets with the darkest legs each year and ended by crossing them to a blue cockerel this spring. All the offspring this year were blue, no barred birds and I got rid of the white cock bird that was in the breeding pen. I will breed the recessive white birds to each other this fall and keep only the visually white chicks. I will also keep the nicest cockerel to breed to the remaing white hens I saved and keep those visually white birds for a bit more genetic diversity in the variety.

Your cockerel appears a bit on the small side (or too compact), how much does he weigh? I think he could have a better transition from the back into the tail also.
Just curious how you tell that they have the barred gene? Is it just the lighter legs, or can you see it in the feathers too. I'd love to start breeding some time, but listening to everything makes my head spin!

. I suppose all the ones i get this year will be my first chickens. im glad i took a chance on this roo and the ladies though.

I wish you still had yours. they are so much like pets sometimes. I know i need to sell some off but which ones. they all become special somehow..

red pyle is just a color pattern. Just like you call a bird splash, or white. Red pyle is this color and almost impossible to get in an Ameraucana. Some of us would still like to try.

I have lots of ideas on how to get them and how im going to work with this guy. But i better let the people who know what they are talking about answer as far as how to best achieve this color in an ameraucana

Edit... Sry. These pics are i believe the OEG red pyle hens if im right. This is the color i think most try to achieve when it comes to red pyle in their hens. I have two that look like the one in the middle but with the color of the one on the left. They came out beardless.
