Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I had posted pics of my new birds a while back. I was wondering if I should put them with my EE's or if any of them are good enough quality to start breeding Ameraucanas. I'm thinking that the blue hen may be a bit too dark. They are all good size and have full beards and muffs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I like them but wait for the experts. I think your blue hen is the best of your blues the cockerel seems a bit to light to me. Just my opinion.

Thanks! I love them regardless, so I won't take offense to any constructive criticism. I don't want to breed birds who are not good examples of the breed. They will make beautiful EE's if they are not up to par as Ameraucanas. The hens lay huge blue eggs, so I couldn't be happier with them. Anyone else?

Sometimes it does just happen, but more than one in the same batch is not a good thing. There is a breeder that I know of, that it is very common in their flock.

Also this happens to amateurs alot too, breeding birds takes alot of time and attention to detail.

I got my birds from Lisa Cree of Cree Farms, and I believe only one has it. I think the girl is just slow to develop both beard and body. I sure do hope though that with the rest of the boys, one is at least perfect enough for show. Is 2 months old enough to tell the difference in who to choose?

As for others, it could be so - They seem to focus more on eggs and not birds.

mopargal1972-the ideal color of blue according to the APA is a medium blue with lacing, sort of between your roo and hen. When you breed blues, though, you get a range
of a pale to even darker than yours. They are all beautiful. Here is a blue at a show, but the desired color blue is the same for all breeds.
Large blue eggs you say? EE's heck no!! Dont worry about the darker color, you can breed and then select the better ones.

Illia-I wouldnt breed them b/c it just wouldnt be a good example of the breed to perpetuate more beardless/muffless birds.
I posted a chart back on post #1793 if you want to see how the genes for muffs and beards work.
Heterozygous birds(birds that only carry one gene for beards and muffs) can produce birds without beards and muffs.
You would have a one chance in four of producing a non bearded or muffed bird, and that from birds who would have beard/muff.

I figure that all Ameraucanas should have muffs and beards; However, of the 8 I got from someone, I have a blue cockerel who just isn't getting any muffs or beard in. I think one of the black pullets, too, may also have either little or no muffs and beard.
Can it be bred out of stock I got it from?

Cottagegarden,

"I have a trio of Blacks. I just aquired a Blue rooster, he is from Paul Smith. I was wanting to breed him with my Black hens to get BBS chicks. The only problem I have is...He's a really dark Blue almost Brown. My question is...Will I get lighter Blue and Splash chicks?"

Blue eggs!!! One of my hens just laid her 4th egg and they look really Blue to me. All of them have been of medium size. I'll post a pic later today and see what ya'll think.

This is for citygirlinthecountry on chick color.Your chick came from the buff orp. hen and will be a cockeral.Red,buff is sex linked so with a black roo the pullets from the orp. will be black and the cockerals will show the buff/black .Chicks from the silver laced w. hen will be black pullets and cockerals showing silver.Probably birchen looking as silver is sex linked also.

You wont get splash chicks without blue hens, in theory you will get 50/50 blue and black chicks. It doesnt really work exact with smaller egg numbers, though. Almost brown? Hmm..well red/gold leaking is leaking and its pronounced if he would have that and..sometimes they can get brassy from the sun, too. A pic should clear that up. Good line, don't worry, but as said anything can pop up even in the best of lines.
Here is one of my roos, he is a darker blue from Paul Smith so he didnt place as well as a better colored one. AND he is out of condition..

I have 7 Ameraucana chicks I hatched out from Mahonri's eggs. They're beautiful chicks. His rooster is a blue wheaten & the hens were both wheaten & blue wheaten.

I know that 2 of my chicks are wheaten roos and at least one chick is a pullet, but am not sure of the other 4. I was hoping someone on this thread could tell me whether the remaining 4 chicks are cockerels/pullets and whether they are W, BW or Splash W.

These are the mystery chicks - #3 is the chick I know is a female - #4 is identical to #7 - I'm guessing #4 & 7 are roos - is that correct? Are they blue wheatens?

#5 & 6 are also identical - I'm hoping they are females. Can you tell what sex and what color they are? I can probably get a better picture of them, if needed.
