Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Levi is over 6 weeks old now. How's he looking? He's getting his saddle feathers and it's so cool that they are so bright coppery-gold-orange in huge contrast to the rest of him. They are still not that visible in a photo yet, though, since they are just coming in.

I know that eggs tend to look more green than they are when you post a photo. I have an EE who lays a pretty green egg, but it's got a touch of robin's egg blue tone in it. You can't see it when I post a picture. And color is often a matter of interpretation, anyway. Our eyes see things differently. I got two eggs from halo, one was the one my BW cockerel, Levi, pictured above, hatched from. They were pale, at the end of the cycle type color, but looked blue to me in person. So, Jean, I guess I do have at least one of your birds, via Kathy.

I'm so sorry Illia. I had the exact same experience once from supposedly the "best of the best" breeder. A dozen GREEN eggs after pouring over the breeder's web site that spoke so much of the importance of breeding for good blue egg color and the years of effort that had been put into developing the blue egg color, and photos of beautiful blue eggs, etc. I remember the feeling of disappointment when I opened the box and saw nothing but green. I'm still not sure what to make of it. There were a few things that happened at the same time that have left me assuming that I got the reject eggs that the breeder did not want to send to better known breeders who had ordered at the same time as I had. But I know that we must be honest in our advertising - if we are working towards a goal but aren't quite there yet, it's only right to pass this info on to whomever buys from us.

Oh, he is a cutie! I have a younger version of him in my batch from Jean. I hope mine looks so handsome when he gets older.

Advertised HERE?!?

Yeah. Normally the eggs are sold at BYC auctions, but I purchased mine through PM's. I was on the hunt for the best blue egg, and saw an old auction. I contacted the breeder after I saw it, and noticed a couple new auctions too. Then I saw her website and more photos, and fell in love. . . Well, I'm no longer in love. I don't even know why mine are green, not blue. . Yes, photos are deceiving, but not when it comes to green vs blue eggs.

Yeah- I got mine in late fall- so I can see them being at the end of their cycle. They were still so blue- just a little on the pale side. I cannot wait for the girls that hatched to start laying!

Levi is so cute!

I have had similar experiences now that some of mine are laying. I too was looking for really blue eggs and made my selections based on that criteria. I ordered from three different ABC breeders. The first set that showed up was a really pastel blue. It was nothing like what they showed on the website. Truthfully, that entire hatch was disappointing. The paleness of the eggs was first and then all of the cockerels ended up leaking gold. The pullets clearly have the gold gene as well, although it manifested in a different way than the roos. I have since sold off all but one pullet out of that bunch. I was waiting to see what her egg color was like before moving her to the EE pen. He egg has a strong green cast to it, so she's now officially in the EE pen. The second hatch came from fairly blue eggs, but I only got roos out of that lot. The third hatch was nice and the birds are lovely. They just started laying and their egg color is in the "C" category on the ABC color chart. It is A LOT greener than what I expected it to be. As they get better at laying, it is blueing up some, but it is still not what I would call blue, you know. It's more teal now. I'm hoping they improve with time. I'm now waiting to see what color eggs the offspring my genetic mix will lay. Hopefully by end of summer they will be in production. In the meantime, my birds form is quite lovely. If I do decide to sell eggs, I'll make it plain that the eggs shift more towards green than towards robin's egg blue.

I totally understand your frustration. I was very, very disappointed when they first started laying.
