Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I'm not sure how your going to find just two chicks unless you buy locally. All mine came from breeders out of state since there are none locally here. I also joined the Ameraucana Beeeders Club. It's very difficult and expensive to find that blue or even aqua egg layer. Some pure Ameraucana's lay different shades of green. Right now I have 3 blue layer I hatched last year. They are two splash and a black hen. My two splash are extremely people friendly. They even walk to the neighbors to be picked up or pet. They snuggle in my arms. Ive never have had any hens do that before. I just hatched 6 more blue layers. I have 3-4 females and 2 males for sure that are 3-4 weeks old. I sit with them outside in a pen everyday for at least an hour, then my kids will for another 1/2 hour or so under a tree. These little ones are very friendly too. My wheaten male stole my heart. He's always sitting next to me and he lets me pick him up without running away. The females are starting to do the same, but I won't know their true temperament until they start laying. I'm only keeping one male if he's 100% non aggressive. I need a sky watcher for hawks and eagles.

The hens lay the same color egg for life as far as I know. I haven't seen a difference in my hens and I've owned chicken for a few years now. The pure Ameraucana's are my very favorite breed due to personality and my favorite layers. I get a lot of blue eggs from my 3 Ameraucana's. They lay everyday or nearly everyday.

These eggs are from my 3 hens. They are from Paul Smith's bloodline. He's a breeder in Texas and ships live chicks.

Here's an egg reference chart. You can buy these chart on the breeders website.

thanks for that information, I should of added that I would be getting them from a lady who Is local. I'm guessing they are true ameraucanas when I was going over all the different chickens she had the said they laid the blue and green eggs. I know most of them look like little chipmuncks or almost like a gold laced cochin as chicks. Does anyone else have any experience with one bird laying more than just one specific color as on both green and blue eggs comming from one bird? Thanks so much everyone

I will see if I can get pictures of a couple of the chicks she has to see what y'all think. I was really wanting a true ameraucana that would guarantee to at least lay a blue or green egg. I've already got brown eggs layers. Don't EEs have a chance to lay a brown egg?

Yes, EE can lay brown eggs! I have one! She has a pea comb and slate blue legs and lays a light brownish pink egg. (The one on the left side of this bowl of eggs) I was somewhat disappointed! Now my coop is full of pullets that will lay every shade of green and blue, dark brown, terra cotta, and of course shades of brown and white! Love the different colors! These are some of my eggs now. Can't wait for the others to start laying! Usually the color they lay first will be the color they always lay. I have, however, had one hen whose brown eggs very slightly from one day to the next. There are only two colors of eggs...white and blue. The brown coloring is like a film that is coated on the eggs as they come out. If the coating is on a white egg, you end up with a brown egg. If the coating is on a blue egg, you get greenish eggs.

If you want to learn more about the differences between real Ameraucanas and EE, go to the EE thread and look at all the pictures. EEs are not a breed of chicken, but a mix. You can have an Ameraucana chick born from two true Ameraucana parents, but if one parent was lavender and one was wheaten, the resulting chick would be considered an EE because it would no longer "breed" true to its coloring. Very weird, but that is the "word" about Ameraucanas. Anyway, EEs are a mix of anything that produces those great colored eggs. Most have beards and muffs, and some sort of green/slate legs. The ones you want to keep are the pea combed ones as the egg color gene is situated closely to the comb gene on the chromosomes. However, there are chickens who have single combs who lay colored eggs....like the Isbar and the Crested Cream Legbar. I just hatched some chicks who will be super blue egg layers. They are a cross between a Lavender Ameraucana roo and a white leghorn and then a cross between the cream Legbar Roo with the white leghorn! Can't wait to see those eggs! Also just hatched some beautiful blue eggs that were Wheaten Ameraucanas I got from a great breeder in Tenn. They are only 10 days old, but looking girly to me! Hoo Hoo!

Or does anyone have pictures of a few variety of ameraucana chicks and EE chicks! I'd love to see the difference. Thanks again! :)
