Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

About a week or so ago I asked if it accurate to sex chicks by how many rows of pea combs. I dont remeber who but someone said they can generally tell gender when they are 3 weeks old. Well I am not that good lol I probably wont be able to sex them until they are at least 8 weeks. Anyways I have 9 chicks, some splash, some black, and some blue, and wanted to see if anybody knows what sex they are. Usually I would think they are way to young to be able to tell, but since someone gave me a glimmer of hope at being able to sex them at a younger age, anybody have a guess. I took comb and face shots, but I also have have pics of stance, feathers, and wingspand if you want to see them. Any help is greatly appreciated, even just saying they are too young, I can just be patient and wait then! BtW the coloring in the pics dont look the best some of the splashes look blue in the pics.

Try the tail feather method.Pullets will have longer tails.I can,t tell on the combs on these yet.

So on the weathens, the "eagle looking ones" are always males? what is throwing me out is that I seem to have three of them (got 20 chicks that are 8 weeks old) Out of the three 2 are definitely males because their combs are redder and I can clearly see three rows, besides they are big and have thick legs, however the third one is smaller and has a pale single comb. I am new to Ameraucanas, I suspect that "eagle looking" is definitely a male, just want a confirmation from the experts. Maybe this third one is just a late bloomer.

I am by far not an expert! Just have been doing a TON of research. The eagle looking ones with a light head color and dark rings of feathers around the neck have been roos (as is one of mine) BUT I couldn't say for sure because I'm not good with the 3 possible colors from the wheatan chicks yet. Very well could be a color pullet I haven't come across yet.
Just a guess based on tips/pics I've seen recently, lots of info crammed in my mind from this new research lol :)

I hate to tell you this as I hope it works for you, but mine that I got from John Blehm in Feb. of this year did not work with the tail method. The one with the shortest stub of a tail turned out to be a pullet. I was happy:)
I guess I will just wait. I dont mind .Mine are from a few different lines. I am going to keep all of them anyways, well as long as there isnt a surplus of roos lol. My chick with the cross beak has the shortest tail and I really want it to be a pullet.

But what you didn't mention is of the two with "tails" - you have one roo and one pullet

They had us guessing a long time.

Mine were the same - I had wing feather sexed three boys, five girls - and the tails seemed to be correct to match. However one of the long tailed ones proved to be a boy. I wish one of the short tailed boys had turned out to be a girl like yours did. Oh well.

One thing that I did notice and keep track of was the size of the legs, the boys did have bigger legs and the width of the comb. The girls were very narrow and shorter length. Good luck they are cute chicks!
