Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Okay, another question. I've got some 14 week-old black Ameraucana cockerels that are not ending up being show-worthy. I am wondering if it's worth it to feed them out to about 6-7 months to butcher them, or should I just cull/sell them now? I've got someone that will butcher for $2/bird. I am allergic to factory chicken broth, so I make my own by crock-potting whole chickens, so I don't need good fryers etc. I know they are not a table bird, but would I just be wasting my time/money?

Thanks,
Angela

The breeder that sold me my Ameraucanas said they would make very good eating birds at 5 months.

You can skin them too. It is less work. $2 is not too bad, however skinning a chicken takes a few minutes and you can save that...to buy more chickens!!! I love young chickens for whole roasting or beer can on the grill chicken. Even AM's weight in at 3-4lbs butcher size quite young. They make tasty broth for sure! I have taken them in myself on occasion when i have both duck and chickens to butcher out at the same time. They also charge almost $2 here.

I just let my neighbor boy try his hand at butchering (pre-turkey season), I gave him one of my Paul Smith lav roos (hatched the end of March) that had a lot of buff in his hackles and was kind of a wack job.

That boy spent three hours on that cockerel but his mom said that it was the best bird they've eaten in awhile and i sent him home with half a muscovy in addition to the am (and I don't know, but I'd almost take muscovy over prime rib any day)

I am going to try to avoid eating my Paul Smith culls, but if it comes to that, I think they'll be good for the slow cooker.

I just need to share how much I am loving my Wheaten Ameraucanas chicks! These are a Gary Ramey line birds and they started out kind of spazzy but have turned into really sweet birds that are loving attention! Fun, Fun!

I love new chickens!
I am getting a black cockerel Thursday. In the pic I saw he looked nice but it wasnt a close up pic, so I guess we will see.
Ditto on lovin the wheatan chicks!

Me too! I was originally just going to get the rooster I was talking about, but the guy I am getting him from said he had some others for sale, so I am also gettin a blue araucana pullet, a black ameraucana pullet, and possibly an easter egger.
