Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

So Jean you didn't answer if you knew anyone in Ohio that may have Wheaten chicks or started pullets or cockerels? Plus another ? Do Wheatens get more color as they get older? My pullets are similar to the ones above with beautiful full beards. Picture is not so good. She was right around 6 months and lays beautiful eggs

I like your hen to, beautiful top line! The hackle splotches are an ongoing issue, at least they are not black! If they were black I would call it ticking, but since they red/brown I am saying splotch. Splotch is just on of those weird words!

little background story and question. I was going to get some eggs from a person. they said they have a blue wheaten rooster, over blue hens. And that they are hatching blue, black, splash, wheaten, and blue wheaten. So what they are saying is you do get pure colors from this cross. Is this true, would you really get these colors?
I have seen the following cross produce a correct Blue Wheaten Ameraucana cockerel:

Blue Wheaten rooster who met all Ameraucana requirements except he was bald-faced, & had large earlobes with a little white in them, plus large wattles
X
EE hen with muffs & beard, who was Blue except for some red in her hackles. I think she had green legs.

The cockerel was the only chick hatched from the crossing, and was beautiful. He met the Standard, but I don't think the crossing could have been counted on to consistently produce qualified offspring.

I wonder if it would even be possible for such a crossing to produce qualified females??

So I am trying to make a decision for flock additions for the Spring. I want to add some colored eggs into my mixed dozens of browns, white and tinted. So I am researching EE's versus true Ameraucanas. EE's are easier to find but I like the idea of breeding down the road!

How many eggs do you get a week with your Ameraucana? What color are your eggs usually? Can the same bird lay both blue and green?

Thanks for the feedback

I average about 3 a week from my ameraucanas. I get stone grey, blue, and a pale teal.

My hatchery EEs average 4-5 a week at 2.5 years old. I get blue, green, green khaki, and olive from them.

What ever color the hen lays is what she lays. It doesn't change color, but color can fade as the laying period goes on. Some of my green layers had faded to blue before they started molting. That's 10 months of laying to get to that, though. I can't wait until they start laying good again and I get the nice deep colors again, since I want to make a few egg ornaments for christmas.

My AM's lay an average of 4 eggs a week. I only have 3 laying adults. I have an EE who lays the same. Each of the birds have their own blue color.

Ok so does anyone on here know what age americanas start laying?
My hatchery Americanas started laying about 5 months old. Mine are from McMurray and they lay a nice large blue egg. I bought them spring of last year. This thread is not used for discussing hatchery Americanas, they call them Easter Eggers on this site and they have their own thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/273489/the-ee-braggers-thread/12670#post_12024386

My purebred Ameraucanas started laying around 6 months old. I have Lavender and Lav/Split (Black) Ameraucanas from John Blehm. They are laying a smaller greenish egg but they just started the beginning of this month. I have 4 Black Ameraucanas from Dak's eggs, looks like two boys and two girls - not laying age yet.

The hatchery birds are a mix so they contain leghorn blood and will lay more often and lay earlier. They are also skinnier and smaller than the Ameraucanas I have. Feather sexing works on them - but not on the Ameraucanas.

im sure they have a blue wheaten rooster iver blue hens. And are saying you aregerting all accepted varities except buff, silver, and ehite plus splash.
No what I was saying is that they have each variety of Ameraucana in there own separate breeding pen. Then when they are selling them, you get what they have available. The chick you get out of the egg theoretically will be the same color as the parents.
