Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

It depends on what you want to breed. Yes, black x splash will give you 100% blue. BBS and lav can all run together and produce BBS and split lavenders. The wheaties can all run together and you can get whetaen, blue wheaten and splash wheaten (depending on the color of you breeding roo).

With ALL due respect, I'm sure you'd be able to tell the difference in a Lavender and a light blue, or a Lavender and a Splash in a split second, but I'd seriously hesitate telling anyone else (especially someone newer to the breed) that it would be ok to let them run together and interbreed. It seems too many people are confused on whether their lighter blues are actually blue or possibly Lavender. Some aren't understanding that they're two separate genes, and that you can't get a Lavender from pure blues.

I got close to purchasing a Lavender Silkie from someone online last year, but then she called it a Splash Lavender! I asked her what she meant and she said she thought it might be both, but wasn't really sure. We mutually agreed that she needed to study the genetics a little more before the chicken was sold.

Edited to add... This was a well known Silkie breeder! Like I said though, I understand YOU know the difference, but...

It was a general question and I gave a general answer. That's why I said that it will create split lavs. At that point they will be visually blue or black but carry the lav gene. The next generation would be the one that would be visually lavender.

It's important that people that are going to sell/buy a select breed, understand the genetics behind that breed or color. I mean really....how many times have we seen EE's as Ameraucana's.......blue vs. lavender....how about advertisments on BST for amerIcana's

end of rant...let's move on.....KATHY WHERE"S THOSE BABY PICS!

Why move on now? This is important and I'd like more opinions.

Agreed, it IS important for people that are going to sell/buy a select breed understand the genetics (as in your case), but it's not always that way and that's all I was pointing out. Just as people are selling EE's as Ameraucanas as you just mentioned, some are now selling light blues as Lavenders.

Also, I do understand the genetics and know that it's the second generation that will produce Lavenders, and that's the generation I was referring to that can cause the confusion when Blue and Splash are involved. Not saying it can't be done, just that it can cause confusion.

...and not saying you or another breeder shouldn't ever do it, or even that I'd never breed a blue with a Lavender, just saying that I wouldn't recommend telling someone to let them run together. It sure wasn't my intent to offend, or give you the need to "rant" as you called it.

His "checks" are getting so full now. Looks like he's packing treats like a Hamster, lol! What a sweetie pie! I can't wait to see what he looks like all grown up.

I have 22 Lavender X Black/Lavender split eggs in the incubator that are due tomorrow night (or close to it). I'm a little nervous, so you guys keep your fingers crossed for me.

Here's proud papa. I don't think he could stick that chest out much further, lol!

I swear I have too much right now - I currently have 11 youngins, and about 18 more due to hatch today and tomorrow. I was expecting to have more or equal amount of Marans, but I don't. . .

And as a little announcement, one of my Blue Wheatens I got from peachick just pipped hours ago!

- A whole day early, but I don't mind.
