Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Congratulations! I hope to see that when I get home today too, ...except with Lavender chicks coming out. I think I see Marans eggs in there too???

I love everyones chick pictures. I could never get tired of seeing those fuzzy checks!

Yup, Marans eggs on the top. They are indeed really light, but if the chicks inside lay their eggs light really fast, I'm going to sell their eggs as eating eggs. . . And they're a great "orange" egg.

The seven little chicks that hatched when all four girls in the pen went broody are doing great

Letting the flock raise the babies is so much easier than cleaning brooders and monitoring heat lamps.

When I last updated, I had placed a chick from the bator under Mia for the night as she ended up on only
a golf ball on hatch day. All was well until I moved them to the ground floor the next morning. Mia freaked
and ran back upstairs, and by the time she returned, the chick had found a new adoptive mama. Poor Mia
followed behind the two mamas and babies for two days, occasionally getting reprimanded for getting too
close to the little ones. At night the mamas and babies would go into the first floor and Mia would head
upstairs where she slept in a nest box, not on the roost. I was sad for her, and a little mad at Claire, the BCM.
Mia put in the weeks of sitting, Claire joined the party in the last few days, yet ended up with the most chicks.
But Claire is a good and doting Mama...

But my good hearted Moms have gradually let Mia join their circle of parenthood, and by the forth night she
was sleeping downstairs with Opie, Claire and the chicks.

Although the chicks don't recognize her as Mom, and run under her when cold or scared, she is as attentive
to them as the other Mamas. My son calls her Auntie Mia

My remaining in the nest on eggs she sneakily laid under broodies girl, Sophie, hatched a chick yesterday.
I'm guessing she'll give up on some as they were laid over five consecutive days. One is Claire's.
Hmmm, this will add a whole new dimension to the flock dynamics....

Aren't they pretty?!

You can see my two two-week old EE chicks with them here -- the darker EE chick was totally pushing the new (bigger!) chicks around too!

My husband was quick to notice and point out that the Ameraucanas have smaller feet than the EE chicks, the ee girls look like they've got some dinosaur feet compared to the ameraucanas! Is that just because they are different breeds?

My hatch is done now.

Of the Ameraucanas - Only 5 out of 15 made it. I don't know why. . . Considering fertility was 100%.

The last one I actually had to help out though, and is still drying in the bator with two Jersey Giants while the rest are in a brooder.

Here's one of my oldest Ameraucanas, he's a VERY sweet cockerel who's turning out pretty good so far. . . I shouldn't worry about that white on his beard yet should I? He's only 2 months old.

What precious pictures! Love the story about "Auntie Mia". Looks like domestic bliss! A far cry from what I'm going through trying to integrate new chicks into an existing flock. They're halfway grown now and the few times I've let them free range together have all ended up with chicks dashing back to hide behind me because the older hens are attacking them. At least the younger ones have figured out that they are safe if they stay close to me! *sigh* Hopefully soon I can put them together.
