Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Here is Fergus. He's about the same age as Gemma. I think he likes her

HI, I need help! I bought 3 Black Ameraucanas a couple months ago and and i was told they where hens but two are actually roos and now I'm wondering if the third one is a roo or not? And I'm returning one of the roos tonight and if there is more then two roos i need to take them all back as i can't have two roos ( I wasn't supposed to have any). The one I'm not sure about is a small black one its comb is really small but at the furthest part from its beak it has three really small kinda ruffles and some black spots, and some of its feathers are shiny, i was wondering does that mean it's a young roo?? ( the other two roos have combs like that but they are all supposed to be the same age so i would have thought if it was a roo it would have grown a comb like the others by now?) I have never had Ameraucanas before so i can't tell the difference's between hens and roos ( at the age they are at which is about 3/3 1/2 months old) An any one tell me if they think it is a roo or am i being paranoid?

We would need a picture to be sure. If you can get a picture of the head and tail of the bird in question it would be really helpful.

But I will say, black pullets will have shiny feathers too, so that doesn't necessarily mean it's a cockerel. You say her comb isn't as large as the other two but is it turning red at all? It should still be pretty pale at this point in time if she's a pullet.

look for sickle feathers. the females tail feathers will be straight and the males will arc like a rainbow.

I'll try to get a picture for you. okay I wasn't sure. It's comb is really pale by her beak but some of it is a little red. I'll see if i can get a picture

I'm surprised at how red her face is at just 3 to 3 1/2 months old but I'm not seeing anything that screams "roo". That comb is small enough to make me say she's a pullet, but I'm pretty inexperienced, I'm sure others will chime in soon. Good luck!

AWESOME!!! thanks! I'm not really sure about how old she is. When i got her they said she was 1 or 2 months old but she looked like she was really 1 month old not 2. i think they just wanted to get ride of them. In this picture she has some ridges in her comb and i wondered is that was a sign that is could be a roo?

The birds were 2-3 months old in July when the OP asked about them the first time, so they are probably around 5 months now. It is a pullet.
