Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Well that may be what is the standard rule is. I still think it isn't accurate by scientific genetics. The genetic description of a hatchery EE and a non-project cross of two show quality Ameraucans are not the same. I just don't believe in calling an almond a peanut.

I have Wheaten, splash and lavender pullets running with a splash and a blue cockerel. If, big if, I were to hatch eggs from either the Wheaten or the Lavender I would not ever suggest they were Ameraucanas because I would never want to saddle someone with the problem of trying to breed out the incorrect color combination of the genes. They would be Easter Eggers to me and to anyone who took them. A purebred doesn't come with a genetic mess that needs to be sorted out before it will breed true to the standard.

I did not have good luck there so I thought I would come here and ask people who are here for this breed. I am not realy getting a very warm welcome here. Surely there are pople on this forum that are interested in helping pople get started in the breed they have a passion for.I have tried to get this from feds stores and other sources that don't realy know what a true ameraucana is and kept getting frustrated. I thought coming here I would find people willing to help me find good birds. I felt like here I could chat with pople who know what the breed realy is and not send me to breeders who have ees or mixed breeds that happen to lay blue eggs.

We are happy to help you find breeders of purebred Ameraucanas. Perhaps you did not start off on the best foot by posting your birds here and insisting they were purebred. You obviously read enough to know they are called EEs - leaving out the pictures and just asking for help would have been much more welcomed than posting crosses and claiming them to be purebred. This thread is for discussing the birds, so that's what we did. I am sorry if you did not feel welcome, but hopefully you did learn something.

First note - the color is called WheatEn - not WheatOn. A beginners mistake, but one that may bother some. It is still a work in progress as it is a hard color to create/maintain. Not many will want to share their breeding stock, but you might luck out and find somebody. I do not know anybody who sells eggs/chicks in the Wheaten colors, and others are still looking as well.

Black is easier to find (and I have 4 Black AMs here to prove it), and I gave you a person to get Lavenders. The breeders on the ABC website will also talk on the forum over there, so you can get a very good idea of who is a true breeder and who is just a member looking to sell their birds/eggs/chicks - and that will tell you who to buy from.

My girls have slate legs and lay very nice blue eggs when you lift their feathers and examine their skin all over it is white not yello like my barred rocks , my camera is off my phone so colors are not that good and it tends to distort things. My buff orpingtons look orange in the sun when I take pictures of them, and they are nice buff color. I am making no claim that my birds are quailty and the chicks they produce will stay on my farm where I can enjoy babies from the only two hens out of my flock that I consider pets. I have two children who are interested in showing chickens. That is one of my reasons for wanting pure acceptable birds. I also love genetics as I am working on my masters in this field and I want to be a part of producing quaility birds of this breed. I guess I should have expected a lot of criticism over my birds, but I love them and I wanted to show the off a little. I know the lady had quailty ameraucanas she showed me a lot of pictures of her birds at shows and the ribbons they won. Maybe she told me wrong on the cross or I understood her wrong, it dosnt mater. I know they are not acceptable and why , I don't need to be told that. What I need is for someone who is willing to point me in the wright direction on finding good birds to start with that my kids may be able to show and to have more of this wonderful breed that I have grown to love.

Oz is a little different. He is over there hatching eggs and lives close to the disaster. ( look for the thread getting the flock out there i think?)Id say as these things go getting him eggs would be as close as one could get to personally helping.

Not at all to disparage your very valid point. Dh and I were just talking about this last night after hearing a story about how logistically challanging it is to get to some of these islands.

x2 he is different. He has a massive hatching operation set up in the Philippines and he travels there several times a year to tend his farm and hatch..... and he can get the chickens to where they are needed. He lost electricity for 3 days during the storm and lost over 100 hatching eggs he paid for. He only wants to help.... it is just chickens and I think all he every has wanted to do was get some PRETTY chickens in the Philippines since the varieties have been limited. He handles the logistics and has decent hatching after all the traveling.

As promised, here are a couple of pictures of hackle and saddle feathers taken from my splash 7.5 month cockerel. The first picture was taken without a flash, with the feathers appropriately taped to the back of the APA SOP. The second picture had a flash and the background is actually black.

Is this just fading and bleaching from the sun and old feathers or is it leakage?

I'm really relieved to hear this. I think there is a special place in H*ll for those who take advantage of the good nature of people wanting to help.

I would call that sun bleaching. I had leakage - and it was VERY obviously gold - in any light.

Join the Ameraucana Breeders Club. There is a link on their web site to breeders by state who will ship eggs and chicks.
