Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I don't think I have see any scorpions since the guineas have been free ranging. NEVER knew we had them here till we bought the farm and I saw little tiny scorpions. The ones here are like a bee sting so not bad but I would rather NOT get stung.

We have little brown ones in Georgia. One morning I woke up with one that had crawled in between me and my nightshirt, and I got stung when I rolled over onto him in my sleep. That's the fastest I've ever woken up in my life. Someone said he was probably just trying to get warm during the cold snap, so then I almost felt bad for smashing him.

Also: Getting an egg a day now from one hen! Seeing those baby blue eggs in my fridge makes me so happy. Hope my other three ladies start laying soon.

Oh my gosh, that is just plain scary! It would give me a heart attack!

The first time I found scorpions in the house I freaked. For one thing, they are the same color as my floors... I lived in Riyadh for many, many years and the little brown scorpions there are very toxic. I was very relieved to find the little Bark scorpions we have here in my part of Texas are not a problem unless you are allergic to them. They are like a bee or wasp sting. I've been stung just once and it was my own fault for picking up a log without gloves on. When I first moved, there had been several very warm winters in a row so there were a lot of scorpions and they were a lot bigger than normal. I had a shipment of furniture coming from the Caribbean, the land of the cockroaches, and I found quite a few brown recluse spiders in the house--now, they are dangerous. So, I broke down and had pest people come in to spray regularly. Any scorpions I found, I would release far from the house. The chickens followed me one day. I released the scorpion, they gobbled it up. I'm counting on them to keep my scorpions at bay so I don't have to use the pest people.

That is fabulous! Yet ANOTHER great reason to keep backyard chickens!!!!

I let my birds free range around the house to cut down on the spiders that make it inside. They help a lot. I'm glad there aren't any scorpions here.
