Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Thanks!!!!

I know he does not have the tufts which makes him unsuitable for showing but OK for breeding, maybe even desirable. What else looks wrong on him? Also I have an Easter Egger roo with the girls right now and the Auracana Rooster has a barn yard chicken and his own coop right now. Would it be more desirable to put the Auraucana with the Easter Eggers or the keep the Easter Egger roo with the Easter Egger hens? I will probably let them hatch eggs and I thought it would be more desirable to stick with one type instead of mix. Any thoughts?
i dont know how many hens u have but you can run both roosters togeather if they will get along

We have 4 hens and then two roosters for them. What do you think? Do I sell the chicks as Easter Eggers then or something else?

no, four hens is not enough for two roosters

At a random guess, I would think that the rumpless rooster might be more likely to carry blue egg genes. So, if you want to improve the chance that the chicks you raise lay blue eggs, I would use the rumpless rooster. The only problem of course, is that you won't KNOW if he carries the blue egg gene until that rooster produces chicks that then lay eggs. So.....this would be a long term experiment.

Because of the risk of wasting a year of breeding (if he doesn't carry the blue egg gene), I would pick the rooster that I liked the best personality wise. However, I would make sure that the rooster I chose had a good fertility rate, before I got rid of the extra one.

He came from a blue egg as did his brother. Will that mean it caries the blue egg gene?

Here is a good article about the blue egg gene:
http://scratchcradle.wordpress.com/2012/07/01/gms1-genetics-of-egg-color/

but in short:
all eggs have either a white or blue base. The blue base color is dominant. So, if the chicken has one blue egg gene the chicken will lay blue eggs, but if the chicken carries two blue egg genes this can make the blue egg a darker/better blue. Green eggs are blue eggs with some brown on top. Brown egg color is just painted on the outside of the shell (white and blue color goes all the way through the shell).

Also I am hatching 6 Amaraucana eggs, 3 blue/black/splash and 3 wheaten, right now from a breeder. They will be pure. Should I put this rumpless Auracana rooster over them? I am not sure what breed I would call the fertile eggs or the chicks. Also would people be interested? We generally sell eggs and chicks. Do I want to keep this rumpless rooster? I am pretty sure he has the blue egg gene and also wondered if it would improve the blueness from the Easter Eggers but will those chicks still be Easter Eggers?

They will still be Easter Eggers, if you put the rooster you have over the pure bred Ameraucana, the chicks will be Easter Eggers.

Maybe you will hit the jackpot and hatch two female and one male from each color. Then you could set up two breeding pens, one for the Blue/Black/Splash and one for the Wheaten.

If you can tell the eggs apart, between your easter egger girls and the Ameraucana girls, then you can put the Easter Eggers with which ever Ameraucana group you want. People do like Easter Eggers, they are fun since the colors vary so much, and some easter egger lay better than Ameraucanas.

If you can't tell the eggs apart between the Easter Egger girls and the Ameraucana girls, you are then stuck with three separate breeding pens.

Or, you can toss all of them into one single pen, all chicks will be Easter Eggers, but you will hopefully get good blue egg layers, and many people would be happy with that.

Remember, that if you put the Blue/Black/Splash Ameraucana WITH the Wheaten Ameraucana, the chicks will be Easter Eggers, not Ameraucana, since they will no longer conform to any Ameraucana color.

Easter Eggers are not really a"Breed" . They are mixed chickens that have a high likelihood of carrying at least 1 gene for blue eggs. They can and do vary greatly in color and type and will lay eggs mostly in the green range with pink, blue or brown a possibility. The typical easter egger has some characteristics in common with ameraucanas such as pea combs, muffs and beards.

Thank you for anserwering my questions and some other questions that where coming up like can all those Ameraucanas go together. I do not plan to put the Ameraucanas in with the Easter eggers as some have blue eggs. I am currently also hatching 12 Easter egg hatching eggs and all the Easter Eggers will go together. I am new to them but they seem like a perfect back yard chicken as they are cute, colorful, produce multiple colored eggs etc.
