Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Oh I see. I have a production red (she is a great broody) that has feathers like that but hers are much worse. I guess you could alaeays do some test breeding but I personal would just move on with a different bird
OK thanks. Since I only have 2 white pullets and the other is small it is worth it to me to try her and just cull her offspring hard.

When do Ameraucanas/EEs, on average, begin to lay?
I have a brown-red who, like her 2 different breed coop sisters will be 8 months old at Christmas. One coop sister, an Australorp, has been consistently laying for about 6 weeks and the other coop sister, a Sicilian Buttercup, has not yet begun even though she's been exhibiting mating behavior and other symptoms occasionally since she was about 5 months.
Where I live in Northern California the winters are rather mild with no snow, but lots of sunshine compared to other parts of the country.
Any insight? Thanx in advance!

Try adding light . They need 12-14 hours of light to lay well . A lamp or Christmas timer works . Six months is a average age to lay . Without extra light it may be March before she lays . Natural day length will be enough then .

Thank you, jerryse! I kinda figured that I may not see an egg from her (and her Sicilian Buttercup coop sister) until spring. Thank goodness their Australorp sister is laying 5-6 a week.

Here's a view from above...you can see her wing feathers arching slightly away from her body.

Here's a side view.

While I was out taking pics of her she flew up onto my shoulder. After flying back down again, her wings seemed to be tucked properly. I can extend them and tuck them but they don't seem to stay that way. Is this something you have seen?
magdelaine would you give me permission to post this photo on my blog natureguide.tumblr.com? i'll link it back to your byc profile

Hello everyone. I have a question about my 7 month old Wheaten Ameraucana. She is a special girl for me and she seems quite healthy. She is just so much smaller than my other birds her age.
I had a Wheaten pullet that was really small at 6 or 7 months old, but continued to grow until she was a normal sized Ameraucana hen by a year. She was a late developer. I never got any eggs from her--sadly, she was an internal layer. I don't think the two were related

My BBS rooster is much, much bigger than my 7 month old hens. Not sure why there is such a dramatic size difference. The pullets seem really little for LF.
