Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hi everyone

I am working on the http://ameraucana.org site, and looking to greatly expand the Gallery. If you have pictures of any of the varieties, at any stage (chicks, youngsters, adults), either bantam or large fowl, I would be very interested in seeing them. Obviously, since this gallery is to represent the best of the best, I would prefer SQ birds only (with the exception of chicks, of course).

Please be aware that no credit is given in the gallery as to where the pictures come from or to whom the birds belong. Pictures submitted may or may not be used, without any explanation given. Pictures not used right away may be used at a later date.

Please send the pictures to my email address: [email protected]. Be sure to have the pics well labeled as to sex, variety, and bantam or large fowl (eg "blue large fowl chick.jpg", "blue lf hen.jpg", etc)

Thanks!

Hello. I had a few questions about my ameraucana rooster. I was told when I bought him that he was a splash wheaton ameraucana. I know thwre are strict guidelines to determine if he is an ameracana or an easter egger. Was wondering what everyone's opinion was about him and if anyone else has any roosters that may look like him. I just hatched 2 chicks from him this week so Im kinda curious about that because the chicks almost look l like lavenders. 1 of the chicks mamas is a silver ameruacana hen and the other is a dark buff easter egger and both the chicks came out a beautiful light grey. Anything that you can share qith this new, fellow ameraucana nut would great. Thanks

Yes, the babies look like lavenders. I have never seen a splash wheaten roo, so I can't really comment about him, but from the picture, there appears to be some lavender shading. Maybe this color baby is what happens when you mix a wheaten with a silver. I would think you have EE's.

I have a genetics question. Are the genes for bantam size dominant over large fowl size?

I'm not an expert, but I was told (and have experienced) that size is incompletely dominant, i.e. a bantam x large fowl cross will typically produce birds somewhere in between the sizes of the parents. Rather than producing a mixture of large/small/medium size, offspring tend to be all around the same size.
