Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

My broody, blue Ameraucana hen........currently sitting on 1 fertile, blue egg!
Any advice or issues I should be aware of with a singleton chick???

gabby3535,
You can always buy some chicks as long as you know when it is due to hatch. You could give her 10-15 more chicks but you have to do it at night so when she wakes up she will almost always accept them but there is always that one goofy chicken that will kill the chicks.
I just hatched over 100 chicks this week mostly Lav Ameraucanas, a few Araucanas(they are the toughest to breed) and some black Orpingtons(from BamaChickens line) and yes a few black Ameraucanas hopefully to replace the old ones. I gave one hen broody 25 chicks but last year I gave one hen in the summer time when it was hot over 35 chicks to take care of. As long as they are alone with chicks there is no problem but you can't let other birds with them, they may kill the chicks. Good luck. Harry

Here are my EE's that I bought from another BYC'er at a poultry swap meet. I do know there are two Buff Orpingtons in there as well. I only had one box with me at the swap and I've just kept them together since this past Saturday. All five of them are suppose to be pullets.

It looks like you might have a good mix- but I've give them a couple mroe weeks to be sure. Boys will get dark feathers on their backs- not necessarily the down underneath- but actual feathers. Congrats!!!!!

I finally got some pics of Jean's babies outside. They are soooo uncooperative!

Santa is in the middle behind the buff's butt. I recently moved them from their own pen into the adult coop. Every one of them- except the blue wheaten- have broken feathers on their backs. I'm assuming the BW guy has been getting it on- even with the other roosters! He is by far the most agressive of their little flock. Hope he doesn't turn out to be a meanie!
