Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I just purchased 3 Ameraucana yesterday. One blue, two splash. Tomorrow I am getting nine 7 week olds all blue and splash. I have one wheaten ameraucana already so I'm making this strictly an Ameraucan pen. I'm super excited but now I need a rooster! I have a wellie roo but he's got to go, he's much too aggressive. Wish there any place that will ship a black or similar Ameraucana roo, also any input on what color Ameraucana rooster would produce some pretty chicks. :)

I got my babies today I'm so happy! My AM chicks came this morning and my oh my are they so cute and friendly, I have 10 blue 8 black and 4 lavender babies, and they're so soft, I love them to bits already, I'll hve a lot to learn about breeding standards but I'm hoping I hve good enough stock to start me out...

AWESOME! love the pose that one in your hand is showing........'strike a pose, VOUGE'......LOL

too bad you're not closer. It's looking more and more like 4 of my blues are going to turn out to be roosters. Two of them are absolutely gorgeous too....

I'm guessing I'll need someone to ship because there aren't many around here. I Would like a mature rooster because of my adult hens. I don't want to wait until these chicks mature although I'm sure I'll have at Least a few roosters

A blue x blue would produce 50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash

Black x black = 100% black
black x blue = 100% blue
Splash x splash= 100% splash.

I'm just going off of memory so if I got something wrong someone please correct me!

My Ameraucanas are a year old and of my 7 hens, two have gone broody. My lav hen and a black hen are doing their best to hatch a golf ball. If it works, I may make lotsa money!

LOL - Broodies love anything round they could possibly hatch! Last year my Silkie thought she could set and hatch a thick cucumber slice!

Almost got it right.

Black x blue = 50% black, 50% blue

The rest of the combinations would be:

Black x splash = 100% blue
Blue x splash = 50% blue, 50% splash

They wouldn't want to breed the wheaten to any of those colors though. Would likely only want to breed the lavenders to themselves.

So I wouldn't want a wheaten rooster of any kind for my ladies?

Wheaten is a different color variety than the black, blue, and splash. Wheaten can be bred with other wheatens, blue wheatens and splash wheatens. Much like the black, blues and splash can be bred together. If you decide to mix the colors you will not produce chicks that fit the standard. In other words, you will not produce colors that fit the standard description and they will not breed true. You will produce EE's which is fine if that is what you want.
