Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Me again, owner of what seems to be a rooster of oddities. He's my first chicken ever so I'm learning as I go. No forum has been able to identify him at all. He's becoming more black but still has a few white tips. And yes he has a mottled comb and feet and beak. Most just assume he's just as chicken mutt as you can get . His personality is to die for. He is very small but you would never know it the way he carries himself and protects his ladies. He started crowing at 4.5 weeks. Here are some pictures at 7 weeks , he's 9 weeks now but I'll have to go take some current pictures later today

But to keep up with the ameraucana theme, my other ameraucana chicks have pink/reddish combs and the black/copper EE has a very very pale pink almost skin colored comb , not any black, camera light was a bit off I think

You need to ask the person who you got them from but with the pictures you are posting can only say the lavender is an Ameraucana. Ameraucanas do not have straight combs as per the standard.

Hi everyone, I have a question about color. I have a ~6 month old black cockerel who, until today, I have seen no other color on. I picked him up earlier and saw these two feathers on his hackles showing gold:

My question is, is there any chance this will molt out, or should I just go ahead and count him out for breeding?

And then after this pic.. He BIT me.. THREE times, lol. So now he has two strikes. Which brings me to my next question. My only other cock is a huge teddybear of a Brahma, so I wonder if I just have a skewed view of them. But are there AM that are so passive as my Brahma? Or is biting something you just expect? I do realize he is a juvenile but just curious. I will not keep an ill-mannered boy, period.

Thanks. :)

And here's a full profile of him, or the best I could get anyway. Feel free to critique, I'll take it. He could look pitiful for all I know. :/

To me that is leakage and not ideal for breeding... I had 1 Am roo who got aggressive and I only kept him as long as I did to fulfill an obligation... he got rehomed very fast after his last attack and only missed the pot cuz a nice guy had many acres to free range him on...
My Lav cockerel (my avatar) is a perfect gentlemen... he is not cuddly, but he is respectful and does not bite, etc... also, I put him in with older hens and seems that they taught him how to behave...
I will never keep an aggressive/biting roo again... JMHO... :)

Thanks SO much. You have reflected my gut feeling on both counts. Look forward to hearing from others too!

I'm new to Ameraucanas, and have three laying hens now. One of my hens doesn't look like the others, is she mixed with something else?
