Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hi, I have a question! I was thinking of doing olive eggers! I am ordering some blue ameraucana chicks along with wheaten and blue wheaten from paul smith.I read where someone bought BBS ameraucanas from paul! He said that some hens where heterozygous! I am not sure I spelled that right! sorry! Half layed light brown eggs, brown painted over white. Has anyone on her used any of pauls birds for olive eggers? Can anyone give me some input! Begginer just trying to figure out how best to make olive eggers! I do have a couple of blue pullets that came out of greener eggs that I hatched would that be better for olive eggers?

For olive eggers, it's best to use a blue layer and a dark brown layer. Olive is still possible with a green layer and brown layer cross, but you will get more brown layers than green layers, since the green layer already has at least one brown gene.

I have new flocks of BCM and Ams this year. I am currently hatching chicks so I can start the culling process, and part of my culling will be to start an olive egger pen. Is there any preference to which breed the rooster comes from?

Nope. You just need one parent to be a pure dark brown egg layer and one parent to be a pure blue egg layer. Green indicates impure breeding, since green is the result of brown egg 'coating' on top of a blue egg shell. It's the dark brown coating on top of a blue egg that makes an egg olive green.

My BCM are older, and I know they are getting a 5-6 average in color, with a few 7s thrown in from time to time. My Ams are Paul Smith, and aren't laying yet. I love my BCM rooster, but he's got bad traits that I need to cull. I would love to give him some Am hens so that I could keep him, and replace him in the BCM pen with a better rooster when I hatch one, or find one

What about where the guy took blue ameraucanas that layed blue eggs X with a black copper Roo and ended up with 1/2 light brown egg layers? I don't get it!

When you get your olive egger pen going! Let me know how it turns out please! I am getting my paul smith ameraucanas early next year and would like to know how yours works out. Thanks!

Hallo ameraucana people, i was wondering how the barred Ameraucana project is going, and wanted to share some info,

I saw that some breeders try to make a barred color ameraucana but the Barring gene has a domininant resecive gene of yellow leg offspring so i did an experiment here on the island of Aruba. And found out that by crossing a purebreed barred rock rooster to a black or black spotted white or white spotted black with pinkish white leg Aruban jungle fowl, will give u 100% white legged-barred color offspring, good source to make the barred Ameraucana most want, so find out around if you can find some pinkish white jungle fowl near your home or state in black color or similar as i did mentioned and use the barred offspring roosters to black and white ameraucana ( may use White ameraucana with silver gene) purebred and use the same methode of the making of legbars to breed u should and up with nice slate color barred ameraucana offsprings at F3 then use F3 offspring rooster to black ameraucana to make the blood line good

Hope this help a bit I am on that project right now i will post pictures in about1.5 year i wish u all the best with the project.

And sorry i cant send eggs to the US, only method if u travel with them as ilegal entry to US
