Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Good Luck with your cockerel selections. Do you have to wait a couple years for them to fully mature and go through a molt before you start down-sizing for breeding?
I only have 7 hens and 10 cockerels, so I will start breeding ASAP to start boosting my breeder flock. Two roosters, one blue and one black, are the obvious leaders at this point. I am going to put the number #3 and #4 selections in a couple of different pens to keep as backup. I have a flock of BCM that I will put one rooster with, and a pen with a bunch of hybrid layers where I can keep another. I got a few pullet pics this weekend

And here is the black cockerel with the best green sheen

One of my splash pullet started to lay. To me the egg looks too green. I tried to compare the egg color chart and thought it looked in person B2. Do you guys think this egg is to green? What color would you call it on the chart?

That's a pretty depth of color. My Blue Wheaten lays a pretty blue but very very light. My breeder apologized that her Wheatens and B/Ws didn't lay very dark but I think breeders are too hard on themselves. I know Whitmore Farms admits their BBS eggs are more blue-green than blue. In fact, from all my website visits and breeder contacts, and friends, getting what one would call a blue rather than blue-green is rare. Kudos to anyone lucky enough to get really blue layers since it seems a breeding challenge. Cream Legbar breeders face the same challenges.

I have 2 BBS cockerels and can only keep one. I'm leaning towards my black. What do you all think too early?

I'm very new to this myself, and my first batch is about the same age as yours, so I can't offer a critical eye. Just based on what I like, that black looks really nice. I'm choosing to keep a black in my AM pen purely for the colors he will throw. I will also have a blue in another pen in case I want a few splash, but I don't want too many splash. I think the solid colors are going to be the big sellers. If you want the chance of any splash chicks, you will have to go with the blue.

Thanks for the opinion! I don't mind not having splash, I'm just looking for better lines and feathering, I can always get a splash out of my F2 generation!
