Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hello all! I just wanted to join this thread since I would like to start breeding Ameraucana hens! I recently ordered 23 hatching eggs, but only 4 of those hatched. I think I'm just going to get chicks next. I don't like the idea of having live animals shipped but I have been unsuccessful finding any real ones local... Here is a picture of one of the ones I just hatched, the only black one; And here is one that is either blue or lavender, I'm not sure. He had a hard time getting out but he seems perfect now;
Where did they come from? Would help on identifying blue or Lav...

Thank you! Any suggestions for good breeders? I know there is a website that lists Ameraucana breeders but I would feel much better hearing from people who have ordered from someone already...

I got mine from Paul Smith, shipped from Texas to SC, and I can't say enough good about Paul or his birds

That's the problem, I got them from 2 different breeders. One had BBS and one Lavender. There's two of them that are that color and I think they both came from the one who had lavenders. I found them on here and the BBS on ebay. There's also another one who is yellow, will that one be splash?

Yellow is probably splash, yes... when they feather, you can tell Lav from Blue as Blue has lacing, Lav does not...

I advise not mixing the BBS with the Lav...

Thanks, so it's possible that a pure AM hen could lay a white egg? Two of them are laying the 50% color of that chart. Now I need one to get the other 25 :D
 Great, not even a month into laying and I'm already having to learn about genetics :gig

Are you kidding!? The genetics is the best part! Though I do wish it didn't take around a year to mate and hatch to see what you've got going on for each generation.

What will happen? I took genetics in college but never learned about chicken colors lol

I believe that since they are on different sections of the DNA they will both express and you get a bird that isn't blue or lavender. Lavender is a pale even color and blue makes it splotchy.
