Well, this is the first time I've had eggs shipped here, but yes, I'm keeping them on the dresser in the guest room, so they don't accidentally jostled by the dogs, until I set them on Monday
I would not wait that long to set . If the eggs were 3 days old (oldest egg in the shipment ) then 2-3 days in transit and then a five day sit on your dresser . 11 days old when you set is iffy IMO . Shipping is rough on eggs yes but old eggs are iffy so 2 strikes against them . I predict disappointment at hatch time . I would set them after 24 hour rest and not turn them for a few days to help the air cells to stop floating around . This is offered as helpful hint not criticism . I have shipped and bought shipped a lot over the years . It is your money and your choice . I wish you good luck no matter which way you do it .

I thought about that, Jerry and wondered if I was setting myself up for disappointment. The oldest gather date is the 17th, but most are in the 20th-22nd range and they were shipped on the 22nd. She shipped extra because of the few that were older. She also did a great job of packaging them, so they weren't jostled around too much, hopefully.

I think I may just go ahead and set them Friday, after one of the trays come out to go into lockdown in the hatcher. I have a Monday hatch date for chicks, so I can ship out on Tuesday, if I need to - but these chicks are going to grow out here, so it won't matter when they hatch.

Thanks!

Oh...and I didn't take it as criticism at all. I have been working with the archives of the Club and have tremendous respect for your dedication and contribution to this breed.

We waited one day on shipped Silkie eggs and had a 55% hatch rate. I think we could have done better, we two more that were completely developed but never pipped.

Not really sure you could have done better, there's so much unseen damage that can happen during shipment.

Setting Friday sounds better!

X2

Susan, I've done many, many shipped eggs... some good, some horrible, and some ok batches... setting them as soon as you are able tends to give the best results, in my experience... although, I would disagree on not turning for too long depending on the air cell conditions... if they're really detached, then yeah I would let them stay upright for a bit... but if they look fairly decent, only slightly detached, I would just set them as normal... I've been seeing more consistently successful hatches that way lately...

Good luck and hope you have a great hatch! :)

This is our Helga. We thought she was a Sicilian Buttercup. She began developing a beard and she has slate legs. Hasn't laid her first egg yet. Does she look like she could be an Americauna? She came from Meyer Hatchery.

I love her coloring! But I don't believe that is a recognized color with Ameraucanas, which puts her as an Easter egger. Beautiful no matter what she is.

She is a gorgeous EE though and should lay a pretty egg...
