Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

These are our 1st homebred AMs. They are 6 months old. We had 8 chicks hatch, but the mother was absolutely terrible and we lost 3. We got 2 pullets and 3 cockerels that survived. These are the boys. The more developed blue male is the dominant boy. There is a black and another blue who seem less developed. Any opinions on how they look for showing? My daughter is 4h and we were hoping to show and sell them this year, but with the flu issues, I assume we wont be allowed at shows for a while.

Our rooster is a black from Tom Kernan and our plan is to get 2 blue pullets from a show breeder in Va this year to add to his flock. We originally got a black roo to put over our black and blue girls and have found we really really love the blues...How would we know if one of the blue roos would be worth keeping for breeding? We were told that breeding a black to a blue would produce darker blues, have others found that to be true?

The first boy is the best overall. He's got good lacing, and a good tail set. The Black's tail is too high, and the other Blue's lacing seems pretty subtle.

X2

Susan, I've done many, many shipped eggs... some good, some horrible, and some ok batches... setting them as soon as you are able tends to give the best results, in my experience... although, I would disagree on not turning for too long depending on the air cell conditions... if they're really detached, then yeah I would let them stay upright for a bit... but if they look fairly decent, only slightly detached, I would just set them as normal... I've been seeing more consistently successful hatches that way lately...

Good luck and hope you have a great hatch!

Well, I listened to all of you. :) Great ideas and great topic of conversation, too.

I put the tray of eggs into the hatcher today. It was already heated up, ready for tomorrow, and those trays don't turn, so they will just sit there for 24 hours or so until I pull the tray out of the incubator. Then the blue eggs (blue as in variety, not blue as in egg color - oh gosh, now I'm confused!) will go into the incubator and the tray for lockdown will go into the hatcher. Hope I don't get confused. LOL

Thanks, everyone, for your input. :)

On another note, I candled the eggs that go into lockdown and have 100% on all except one pen. Out of 45 eggs set, 44 will be going into lockdown tomorrow, with only one egg a non-starter. :) Looks like my blacks are finally getting the idea.

Great news! Hopefully my black will be better this time :fl
