Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

How do you tell between ameraucanas and Easter eggers?
Ameraucanas have very strict color varieties. Anything that lays a pretty egg, but doesn't match up to one of those colors is considered an Easter Egger.

Even mixing a buff ameraucana with a blue ameraucana, will produce an Easter Egger.

What color eggs would they each be?

Can both breeds produce blue eggs?

Egg color would be determined by the parents, regardless of breed.
So if the hen lays blue eggs, and the rooster lays blue eggs, the chick should lay blue eggs.
Easter Eggers can lay any kind of color egg because they can be a mix of many different breeds, not just different colors of Ameraucanas.

Easter Eggers are not a recognized APA breed. They GENERALLY will have a blue egg gene and will lay some shade of blue to blue-green to green depending on the cross used to create them. BUT since the parents didn't necessarily have TWO blue genes, the chicks may have NO blue egg gene and will lay white or brown.

The referenced "buff AM crossed with blue AM" WILL lay blue eggs since both parents were Ameraucana but the color will be non standard, therefore it is NOT an Ameraucana.

Confused yet??
