Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

The high grass is where they go mid-day. The ground is still damp there, so that's where all the snails and slugs are (my flocks' favorite things to eat). It's also where the wild blackberries grow.
It helps that my lawn isn't really sod, like most lawns. It's just open space that gets mowed regularly. There's wild strawberries, clover, and other ground cover type plants growing all through it.

X2 - My girls eat their expensive organic food (littles start and grow and hens layer pellets) for about a minute then free range the back area the rest of the day. Same situation, not just lawn grass. What I've observed is that they nibble and walk, not just gobbling down loose grass.

BTW, congratulations marchick on your successful surgery. Best of luck on full recovery.

I hear ya! They remind me of Eagles. LOL I love how they look. I didn't find out about them until I had already ordered some BBS and I don't have room for them. My other breed is German New Hampshires and they are coming along nicely as well but if I ever get a chance to get another breed, it will be the Blue Wheaton. Lucky you, and Susan they are beautiful!

My girls free range and when they eat grass they rip bits off and eat them, no long pieces. Like JBG's chickens, they eat the short "lawn" type grass and only eat the seeds on the tall "hay type" grass. They eat white clover flowers (the wild bunnies seem to prefer the red clover flowers), weed and grass seeds, almost any bug they can find. All these things are small when they hit the chicken's crop. Worms, on the other hand, go down whole.

Hello my name is Carly and i respect the fact that you only want ameraucana talk on this thread! That said i believe I am one of those people that was sold an EE instead of a purebred Ameraucana. I'm disappointed to say the least! I was hoping a professional Ameraucana breeder and/or enthusiasts would be able to tell me if they really are purebred or not. I have come to realize that my issue is not the only one, and is very common. I bought my two birds from what I believed was a reputable breeder and then after waiting 3.5 weeks i receive 2under age chicks that were sick!!.....they are doing well now and are about to start laying! I'm interested to see the color of the eggs....maybe that will help distinguish what they are. They are about 14 weeks in the photos any help would be awesome!! Thank you for your time and your help!
