Question. When you say their feathering is "loose" are you referring to the individual strands on the feathers not sticking together?

Edit - oh, the second pullet (based on our observations) is most likely also from Max. He throws some lovely offspring!

This is just a stage they go through. Ameraucanas should have tight feathering...look at this pic and you'll see the difference. Of course, this is a picture of an older cockerel, who is just about done with his juvenile molt - just waiting for his tail to finish coming in.



See how tight his feathers are? Looks like a tightly knit feather jacket.

I am pleased with what I've seen so far, which is why I'm repeating that breeding pen for 2017!

I got all my ams from a local breeder here in NW Arkansas. They're all Paul Smith lines, and I'm really impressed with how they've kept selecting for the best qualities in their breeding programs. My black's parents have the most green I've EVER seen on a black bird. They're gorgeous. Thanks for the tip, tho. If I ever want to add new blood to my flock, I'll be sure and keep her in mind.

I have two Ameraucana that I hatched on April 4 of this year. When should they start laying eggs? My other hatch of Barred Rocks have been laying for a few weeks and they are a month younger.

Depends on the line they are from, and also if they are really Ameraucana or Easter Eggers instead.

They usually start anywhere from 22 wks to 28 wks has been my experience.
