Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

For a backyard flock, nothing wrong with a beardless at all... I was just curious if I was seeing her correctly... good to hear that they took to Pearl so well... she does look like a sweet girl...

The breeder is a good guy. He's been working on feather lacing he told me...with his Ameraucanas. So some of the chicks are part of his work with this particular trait. And part of the project of trying new things I suppose gets you a few Ameraucana without beards. I love those big old cheeks on Ameraucanas but not deal breakers for me; what I love most of all are the blue eggs! LOL. That particular bird leads the 3. She's very protective and leads the other two around well. Smart thing. Charmed by all 3 really. Thanks so much Ravyn for your nice comments on them.

Hi, everyone! I have two ameraucana girls that turned 21 weeks yesterday, and I was wondering when you all got your first eggs from your girls. Also, should I be concerned about my girls both having a weird, random black (iridescent) feather in the same place on their sides? Is that a disqualification? My girls are from pure Paul Smith lines, just FYI. Here's a pic showing the black feather:

I don't think it is a disqualification, but would likely be a fault.

Ok, so does that mean I probably shouldn't use them for breeding? They're my only blues, and really want to breed some BBS.I plan on getting a blue roo once my breeder has some available. Would getting a light blue possibly correct the problem?

It is what the blue gene does in my experience . Not all will have this . Not sure if there is a cure . Maybe someone else knows .

You're not going to find a perfect bird. Well, I won't say not, but perfect birds are hard to find. You could end up trading one fault for two or maybe something hidden and worse. So, try working with what you have, see what you get, and if something better presents itself make a move then.

Ok. Thank you guys so much! This is my first time with ameraucanas, and after searching so long for real ams I just wanted to be sure I'd gotten good ones, since I'd like to breed. I'm loving this breed so far and really want to try to improve upon it. Hopefully I can get myself some amazing offspring out of these two girls, because so far I've been really pleased with their type, and Nora has nearly perfect lacing, which is not super evident in that pic, and her sister, Cora, has the perfect ameraucana body type, so I think I could really have some success with them, and I thank you both for your advice. It really is very appreciated, especially from two people whose expertise I really trust. Thanks, guys! And wish me luck with my girls!!!

ETA: Still waiting for my dang blue eggs, tho. They're 21 1/2 weeks now, and their combs are still totally nude colored, so I think I have quite a wait ahead of me....bummer.
