Are you looking for the blue egg gene, or blue chicken color gene?

As for Araucanas, where do you live? You'd be surprised where the few and rare breeders are.

I'm looking for the egg gene and I live in SC close to Columbia. I really want true Aracaunas but am afraid I won't get what I'm paying for.

What BBS combo are her parents?

Blue cock, black hen. She also came out of the bluest egg from the batch. Funny part is - She's yet to lay an egg, even though my WBW Ameraucanas are a month younger, and just beginning to lay today.

Speaking of which, here's my first Blue Wheaten egg! It is quite rich and blue.

VERY pretty!

Thank you to both of you for the information. I knew they were not true Ameraucanas mainly because who we got the eggs from have a mix of breeds and we got eggs from him blindly, not knowing what was what. I love them anyway! We used to have 9 other older hens, and I guess a live and learn experience, still so sad about losing them to a coyote!!!!!! We let them free range in the day ( I am a stay at home mom) so I was out there all the time with them, and before dark would put them up. Unfortunately once that coyote knew they were there he did not stop until he got them all. Really sad stuff because two of the older hens were like our honorary queens of the yard!
Anyway that was off the subject. I appreciate your help, when my husband sexed them when they were younger he said 3 hens and 3 roosters, but then when we did not see the big wattle on any of the others we just thought we had one rooster. But I assume with the cross breed not all roosters have that big comb and wattle.
Thanks again! I think they are all pretty!

Thanks also for that information, would have never knew who would carry that gene on more. Still undecided if we will breed, our little boy wants us to but not sure how the rooster will go over in our neck of the woods!
LOVE this forum, everyone is so nice I appreciate all the help and advice!

Its difficult to make a call on those two birds from the pics , but I'm leaning towards EE . The upper pic looks like a blue Ameraucana but her stance makes it look like the body type is wrong ; and if she is bearded and muffed they haven't developed much yet . I do have a pullet I bought that is pure Ameraucana , but both her type and color is not very good . The lower pic is lighted wrong for a clear view but appears as if he/she might have quite a bit of red bleeding into the blue ; while its still possible both of it's parents were pure Ameraucana you don't want that in a Ameraucana [ although its pretty ] .

For those of you who have pictures of your 'teenage' roo/pullets--could you show us how to tell the difference between a pullet and a roo 's comb???

I have 11--8 week old true Blue and Black Ameraucanas.. Someone mentioned the comb of the young males have three ridges, someone else says the male comb will be redder earlier than the pullet... I have looked at tons of pictures and still can't seem to decide if I have roos or pullets...

Everyday, I am out there--I think this is a roo--the next, it looks like a pullet...

I would love to see any of your pictures ---of young stock.. Thank you...

This is a splash pullet & cockerel when they were 10 weeks old. The pullet is on the left and cockerel on the right. It also took me a while to tell that I had one of each. I think it was right about 9 to 10 weeks when the boys started to look obviously different.

This is at about 6 weeks. Darker cockerel on left & pullet on right.
