Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

W/BW question-

Relates to what a splash looks like. The first batch of chicks are feathering in nice, I think they are about four weeks of age. In looking closely at them I see that one of them has powder blue feathers with tan lacing. Is that a splash? I'll try to get photos of the little jumping beans but the lacing seem body-wide.

nope that is more tan likely a young blue wheaten roo. The splash hens are tan with white where blue or black would be (picture on pg 4 post #40). A splash roo is mostly white and redishish, red on the shoulders and have a blue tail. Here's a picture of peachick's splash wheaten rooster

Now, is ANYONE here in need to get rid of their Blue Wheaten, Wheaten, or Splash Wheaten cockerel? And able to get it to the Pacific Northwest?

Look at these little beauties I hatched out of Jean's eggs! The black and the black & white chick are Lavender splits. I have a question about the black and white chick~ it seems to be feathering in black, but what does the white on it indicate for final color and genes for breeding? Another question maybe someone can answer for me is, as far as sexing, what does the longer wing feathers (you can see them in the picture) on the one Lavender chick mean? In my Wyandottes the chicks with longer feathers on the wings have turned out to be roosters.

I do have a wheaten cockerel available right now. He's not quite sure he's a boy yet but getting there age wise. I do ship.

A pullet laying for the first time has such a biological urge to lay that the length of day doesn't seem to make a difference. They lay anyway.
As they get older, however, length of day becomes more important.

My April 25th batch is starting to lay. I have had several of the Ameracaunas lay - from very pale blue to a deep teal. Yesterday, my first Speckled Sussex egg appeared - I almost missed it because she laid it inbetween the door and the board that keeps the bedding contained in the coop. I almost stepped on it. My welsumers' combs are red, but their pelvic bones don't seem far enough apart quite yet. I noticed that the welsumer's pelvic bones are quite sharp compared to the Ameracaunas and the SS. Has anyone else noticed this?

I collected 2 more gorgeous blue eggs from my W/BW pullets this morning! I'm still waiting on the third to get her butt in gear and start laying.
Then... I pen them with my BW cockerel and start hatching!

I thought you were supposed to wait a while to start hatching pullet eggs. Anyone know what the ideal age for getting good hatching eggs is? I was told a pullet should be laying for at least 2 months before trying to hatch her eggs.
