Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

This is all so interesting.

I suppose the "errent" genes are impossible to completely eliminate. Even people have birth defects now and then that are totally unexplainable.

For example, look at me.... perfect specimen. Then look at my siblings. There must have been a "milkman" in the mix somewhere.

Yes, I figured she was a favorite of the boys. . . So, how old is she? Any chances she'll molt this year? My 8 month old BBS Ameraucanas seem to be going through a molt right now.

She won't molt this year. I don't know what color egg she is laying either. The buffs tend to be way on the greener side. The male though, does carry the blue gene and was hatched from a nice blue egg.

On the weird looking roo posted from Mahonri, I would assume that he is a BW X Salmon Fav.

PS I haven't got one of those weird "white" wheatens. But, I have changed my cock bird every year for the last couple years now, searching for the right combination for clean hackles. I will be taking a step back next year to fix the beard and muff problem. I have a new cockerel outside from Barbara Campbell waiting to meet the girls.

BW X Salmon Fav. That was my first thought.

I have a LOVELY black roo that juliect hatched from AHappyChicks eggs. He looks just like that.

Speaking of clean faced- I just hatched a bunch of eggs from one of my clean faced wheaten hens, fathered by an LF splash cochin. They all have beards! Go figure! So much for the 1 in 4 odds, eh?

Will you still be offering W/BW hatching eggs next spring then Jean? I'd love to add some more to my small flock, I plan on hatching my own eggs but it'd be great to have some line diversity.

Hey, I've got a blue pullet I KNOW should have full beard and muffs (never heard otherwise from her lines) and what happens? An Araucana breeds her, and out comes a clean faced chick. . . .

( No, I did not purposefully breed those two)

Remember how I asked if my BW cockerels beard would fill in with more blue feathers? I was out in the run with the birds yesterday and it appears as if it has. He's still got some white fluff, mainly around his beak but a lot of his beard is predominantly blue feathers now. I will try to post some photos this afternoon.

.

My Salmon Faverolle girl that I had, was complete with have muffs and beard... and so does Geoffrey.

Here is what I got from the only egg that came out of my Salmon Faverolle hen when she was under Geoffrey.

Five toes and all.

He was beautiful. Looked just like a blue wheaten roo but with the faverolle hackles and saddle feathers... no duckwing coloring.

The only other possibility is an EE hen that I thought I had gotten rid of before that hatch, other than that it had to be from one of my w/bw girls under Geoffrey. (my blue wheaten roo.)
