Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I meant Wheaten, not Blue Wheaten, which is what I get for posting late at night. Regardless, he's an Ameraucana, his mother was Wheaten and his Father was Blue Wheaten.

I don't want to sound pushy or rude, but I honestly think that maybe one of the parents was actually a wild-type duckwing color, which sometimes can look a little like a Wheaten. That cockerel still is a Golden Duckwing in color.

His body is quite fitting, and his head is nice too, but again his comb is tall, and I can't see much of how his tail is. Is it pretty well spread, is it at a 45 degree angle? Love his leg spacing though!

I can't even imagine who's egg he could possibly have come out of! I did have a number of EEs in that hatch but wow. He's pretty but he's not wheaten... I've never seen another one like that one.

He doesn't look Wheaten at all unless the camera is giving us different colors.. .he truly does look Golden Duckwing!

I did have some BW X Salmon Favs in that hatch but I thought they all had muffs.

Also I got a muffed bird with a big floppy pea comb like that.. .he had great BW coloring but that big floppy pea comb.

I also feel certain that I have culled the two hens that were giving me clean faced chicks... like I said, we'll see come April after my 2nd hatch when all of the girls are done laying.

I promise you a better roo out of my new years hatch. I'll even deliver it if I need to!

I think I have finally relaxed myself regarding errant genes. I was hatching some clean faced chicks myself, and I think I cleaned out the pen from the ones that I was getting them from. But every now and again, something wierd pops up, like that "white wheaten" gene I was dealing with. Im hatching B/W Ams. now; Ive hatched about 30 and will hatch about 30 more. So far all poofy faced, and no wierdo "white" ones.

I was hatching black rocks this past spring; they were 3rd generation my own breedings, pure gorgeous green sheened black. Imagine my surprise when one of the boys I was growing up turned birchen! Just that single one; and I was hatching a LOT...over 100. So Im just trying to learn to just go with the flow when an odd one shows up, and figure even the best of them can have it happen.

So you get the white wheaten, I get a GOLDEN DUCKWING... where did that gene come from?????

In that hatch it was only my eggs and Jeans. and at that time my eggs only had genes from Melissa and Jean

I'm thinking it had to have come from an errant EE egg that somehow got into the mix.

I did hatch out one clean faced pullet from Melissa's eggs the first time... and I think all her birds came from Smith.

it happens all of my adults have huge beards and out of over 100 chicks that i hatched out i got 3 clean faced... i allso got 1 with an extra joint on the end of her wings... and one with white legs... i think that alot of it is from the Ameraucanas being a newer breed... and having such a varied history behind them... but remember that the SOP only calls for a "breed" to breed true 50% of the time... you are going to get culls that is just part of it...

Haha, here's my "White Wheaten" crowing

I still keep him as he's got the highest fertility/eagerness to breed of any cockerel I've known, and to customers who just want pretty Blue Wheaten Ameraucana hens, he'll give that about 70% of the time. So, I hatch the eggs myself. But after this fall, that's all. . . I'll be looking into (and already am) a better Wheaten/Blue Wheaten cockerel.

I believe the White Wheaten issue is just from someone accidentally putting some recessive white into their stock.

Illia, can we slip some of his eggs into my order with the W/B Wheaten Marans.... He is stunning.

What do you get the other 30% of the time???

I believe white. I just hatched some eggs from him, and I've got one that looks just as he did when he was a chick.

I think there's a pullet in my flock has one rec White allele, and so with him having both, I'm getting whites from herxhim. I REALLY need to test the girls individually before I use one for my Buffs. I do NOT want to have white haunting my buffs. . .
