I'm planning to get some black and lavender ameraucanas this spring.
I know I want those two varieties, but I think I would like to throw a 3rd variety in. I'm undecided....Silver? Buff? Wheaton? I just don't know.
Can someone give me some of their opinions on the other varieties, such as which ones lay the "bluest" eggs, what their personalities are like (if one variety is different from another) or any other variables.
Are there really nice silvers out there? Some of the pictures I have seen make them look "not so good."
I'm partial to Whites. That way you can breed all of them together because they are all Black (E locus). Whites and Lavenders are both recessive, so breeding them to another will give you a split. Where as the wheatens are Ewh....though I love my wheaties too.
What about the silvers? Do they lay a good colored egg? What about personality? I prefer fairly calm, docile birds. Just from looking at pictures, my husband voted for the silvers. I'm still undecided.
John Blehm has a chart on his site where he rates some of the characteristics of his colors of Ameraucanas. I believe they are rating his own birds, but it may be a nice resource for you while you are trying to make your decisions.

Is there anyone with brown-red who sells eggs. They aren't readily available. I know Mr. Gilbert has them, but doesn't sell eggs. Excuse this mini-rant, but anyone who complains about their variety not being more popular should make them available not occasionally release an adult pair here and there. JMO
