So Sorry Jeremy and Tyler

I had a bunch of losses here a short while back. The predators surely get worse in the winter here. So far we've been lucky (knock on wood) and they're all weathering the snow and sub zero temps pretty well. The electric company is going to love me this month

Yesterday a barn not far from here burned to the ground. It was full of chickens and pigeons. The fire was believed to be started by a heat lamp.

Be careful with those heat lamps and don't use them unless you need to. It gets very cold here, and all of my birds seem to do fine with the cold as long as they are dry and out of the wind.

I have some 2 week old chicks, however, and they are in the house. They are not ready for the cold of course, and we have so many power outages that if the power went out while I wasn't here and they were in a brooder out in the barn, they would freeze for sure.

I re-stocked my supply of "hot hands" and got some of the bigger ones that they call body warmers. Good thing to keep around in case you have chicks inside and are prone to power outages like we are. They're cheap too.

Yes these are great! Warning though, stock up on them now while they are in stock. I tried to find some last spring and it was a bust. I'm stocked up now though.

OH NO! I'm so sorry for your loss! What happened?

Well I guess they were just too cold. So now I'm going to build some insulated bantam breeding hutches for them to live in all year. They were the two youngest and I just bought them in October and I'm super bummed so after I take my finals and start my Christmas break I'm going to try to get my name on some list to replenish what I lost. I lost a nice wheaten hen from neil townsend and a patty pickard pullet.... so what do i do. I round up all the bantams and they are now living in my garage! I think I over reacted then my ducks got out today.... its been busy at TK Poultry LOL

i worry about power outages too , this is also my reasoning behind a wood burning stove , as well as the propane hot water heater , i gotta be warm , and gotta have a hot shower ... and with the wood stove i can move the brooders inside if i need too to keep the chicks warm , since im only brooding chicks im keeping so as of right now i have 3 silkies , 2 black lav split orps, 5 guineas , 2 project birds , 15 quail , 5 bbs ameraucana, 5 fbcm , 5 buff orps , and 2 '' sports bcm '' ( whatever those are but its what i was told by the breeder when i asked about them ) but idk ... then i have 7 rir , and 16 black lav split orp eggs in the bator still , and im hoping my new orps and all my ameraucanas will start laying sometime soon ... my luck they will start when its always freezing out and i wont be able to hatch any eggs ...

I've been really dissappointed in my wheatens and the lack of eggs. I was super excited to find out that my toulouse started laying (glad SOMEBODY is!) , but all of the eggs are getting frozen by the time I find them

I've had the same problem with not getting to the eggs fast enough before they freeze. Now that I'm actually getting a few. I can't believe I have had to buy eating eggs from the grocery store. Ugh!
