Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

My Ameracaunas are laying lovely eggs, very clear blue, BUT, they are very small. Does anyone else have this problem?

Maybe when it is a little warmer, I will get some eggs from someone who has pretty but LARGE eggs and hatch them out. Any suggestions?

Some of the bands are adjustable, we have colored metal one we several holes so you can fit it right. Check out I think Smith Poultry website out of Kansas- sorry I don't have a link for you but type it in on your search bar.

I was hoping for plastic. Any thoughts?

Check out Smith's I think they had a chart of some kind explaining what size to use otherwise you would probably be able to call them and ask

I use size 12 for females and cockerels, 14 for mature males.

How well do the plastic ones stand up as far as numbers staying on and breaking?

It depends on the brand. I bought some pretty ones at the Ohio National in 09 and they kept falling off; they seemed to be pretty flimsy. You will need to change them every 1-2 years as the numbers will rub off.

So I think I'm making some progress with my new REFORM and EDUCATE campaign I made up on a whim last night.

So far I've gotten 3 responses for 8 hatcheries. Some good responses some not.

Rochester says quote, "Wish you had contacted us before the 2011 catalogue went out!"GOOD SIGN!

Cackle says quote, "We did change the name of ours last year to 'Easter Egger' chicken."Good

Ideal says quote, "Our Ameraucanas are purebred Ameraucanas. We do not select for any specific color trait and we also do not guarantee that they are of show quality. To place another name on our breed would be unfair as they are pure bred Ameraucanas, they are just not selected for color patterns. We hope this information helps. Thank you."
Not such a good answer. I want to respond yet be nice.

Progress, Yes?

Hmmm...with Ideal, it seems to me that if they have a Jack Russel terrier and a Yorkshire terrier, and breed them together it is still a "pure" bred terrier? I am not to keen on their response, but the other two are good responses!

Yeah I want to respond in some way to that email but I feel with the stance they have taken it could turn ugly pretty fast and that is in no way my intension. But if I would have gotten with Rochester a few weeks before maybe then I could have gotten a litte further. Still waiting on some more responses and planning my next move.
