Oh that wheaten chick! I can't wait to get some babies hatching- they grow up so fast. And then you have to wait like 9 months for them to lay....

Anyway- with the wheatens you will be able to see dark feathers on the back- especially on the back of the neck. Either blue or black. The splash wheatens can be harder to tell unless they show dark red in the same area. Congrats on the chicks!

No kidding on the 9-months-to-lay thing. My Sandy is STILL teasing me with her daily nest-sitting. She's been doing it for almost three weeks now & still nothing!! She'll be 10 months old on the 24th!

The cockerels start to get dark feathers in a few days. Pullets take longer and their feathers are much lighter.

I have 2, 1 week old wheaten cockerels and they have dark feathers already. They are also available if anyone is interested.

I'm curious as to the wheaten chick's vivid yellow beak and shanks . I've got some crosses from a white Ameraucana on a yellow skinned breed . They were hatched with yellow beaks and shanks , one went to willow green shanks first , but all ended up with slate shanks and horn beaks . I thought maybe the yellow showed at hatch because all of my crosses are carrying one copy for yellow skin , beaks , and shanks ; a gene recessive to white skin . My crosses can pass as Ameraucana [ though twice as big ] , but I know they're going to produce some green shanked chicks .
